Long before director Tom Hooper decided to capture every stutter, breath, and shaky note on-set in last year's musical adaptation of “Les Miserables,” the 1975 Burt Reynolds-starrer “At Long Last Love” captured the same immediacy just as well, but garnered none of Hooper's acclaim. The film was a flop both critically and financially, and -- alongside two other such failures -- sidelined its helmer, Peter Bogdanovich, for a spell. But with the musical now experiencing a re-release on Blu-ray, the legendary director spoke recently about the unexpected occasion, and much more.

Poor Peter Bogdanovich. When was the last time the well-respected filmmaker made a narrative feature that remotely moved the needle (let's not include the good doc, "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream")? "Cat's Meow" in 2001, which wasn't very good? And before that, "Mask" in 1985? The well-liked filmmaker, actor and cinephile has had a pretty rough go of it in Hollywood (an unimpeachable beginning, a quick fall from grace), but perhaps his upcoming picture will be a late-era comeback?

Excited for Quentin Tarantino’s latest? Well, chances are you’ll be even more excited when you find out that “Django Unchained” is the “shortest long Western since 'Rio Bravo' ”…no, we weren’t entirely sure what that meant at first either. Well, for QT it’s definitely a thing, and the man knows his cinema, so who are we to argue? He’d apparently been so busy trimming the film down from over three hours to a final running time of 2 hours 44 minutes (hence it’s shortest long Western tag) that he almost missed the deadline for the first critics screenings, which began on Saturday. Luckily the reaction has been pretty great so far, even if some have been questioning its awards potential.

HBO might be turning into something of a safe haven for the kind of smart, adult programming that's increasingly rare in theaters, but not everything gets to make the cut. With shows like "True Blood" and "Game Of Thrones" becoming long-running hits, and newcomers like "Girls" and "The Newsroom" getting second season pickups, there's only so much room on the schedule, and it means that even high-profile shows aren't necessarily getting the go-ahead.

With Wes Anderson and Noam Baumbach producing, and a top drawer cast coming together including names like Owen Wilson, Olivia Wilde, Brie Larson and Jason Schwartzmann, Peter Bogdanovich is set for a nice comeback with the upcoming screwball comedy "Squirrel To The Nuts." While that's cooking, though, the writer-director evidently has another project in the works that's a little more serious and will reunite him with a former collaborator.

Nothing ever truly dies in Hollywood, and even though intel about "Squirrel To The Nuts" dropped way back in the fall of 2010 without much heard of it since, it seems lots has been happening behind the scenes, with the pic now making some giant strides, with three of our favorite filmmakers helping it happen.

Oscar nominated actor John Hawkes and certified legend Peter Bogdanovich are set to the lead the ensemble of the indie drama "Too Late." The "Martha Marcy May Marlene" star will play the part of a private investigator who is hired to find a missing woman with whom he has a troubled relationship.

Sad news broke late yesterday, with the announcement of the death of the film producer, writer and art director Polly Platt, who passed away of Lou Gehrig's disease at the age of 72. Platt's contribution to cinema has been greatly undervalued over the years, but she was someone with a diverse skill-set, who played a key role in a number of classic films.

Esteemed filmmaker, film critic and journalist Peter Bogdanovich is cinema's biggest namedropper without a doubt, but he's definitely aware of his good fortune. "I know I actually knew all these people," Bogdanovich said in reaction to audience laughter over his ceaseless references, quotes and anecdotes about legendary cinema icons and friends like Orson Welles, Howard Hawks and John "Jack" Ford. "I really did know them, it's amazing. I know, I pinch myself."

Bogdanovich Has Also Finished Screenplay For 'Turn Of The Century'So yes, we're on IndieWire now, which technically means that director and Hollywood encyclopedia Peter Bogdanovich is our colleague (in case you didn't know, he's got a blog), but though we have yet to run into him by the water cooler and ask him if he saw "The Office" last night, it might be because he's been busy working on a couple of new films.
