Review: 'I Don't Know How She Does It' Is A Pained, Unfunny, Politically Questionable Bore

One of the "charmingly neurotic" tics of the main character of "I Don't Know How She Does It," played brittlely and with affected strain by Sarah Jessica Parker, is making to-do lists. Since the year is 2011 and editing software has come a long way, we see her visualize the list as the prepares for sleep – everything from arranging her daughter's play date to doing some Kegel exercises (yes, seriously) – with words and small images appearing tattooed on the ceiling of her bohemian chic Boston apartment (accompanied by a never-ending stream of voice-over narration). While watching "I Don't Know How She Does It," which at a swift 89 minutes still feels longer than the "Three Colors" trilogy combined, you'll be tempted to make a similar mental inventory of things that you could (and should),instead of watching this wretched claptrap, which we're fairly certain has single-handedly set the feminist cause back a good 35-40 years.

Danny DeVito's film career has hit somewhat of a pause for the last couple of years (presumably as a result of his commitment to FX comedy series "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia"), but it looks as though he'll soon be returning in a big way with a directorial effort planned for the adaptation of author Avi's young-adult novel "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle."

UPDATE: Much thanks to commenter tornepl we now have a more quality look at the pics posted below, plus a bonus behind the scenes snap of what appears to be Bier, Brosnan and crew traipsing through the woods. Still no word on an official synopsis, but these stills are looking very nice.

A few weeks back, "Bridesmaids" struck something of a blow for the female-fronted comedy, by doing what so few have in recent years, and remembering to be funny and touching while failing to be patronizing, unpleasant, one-dimensional and misogynistic in its depiction of its characters. Did it mark an opening of the floodgates? After all, the film's breakout star Melissa McCarthy, not exactly your traditional female lead, has already landed a starring role in a new project, while the more imminent films in the same genre, projects like "Bad Teacher" and "What's Your Number," seem to give some reason for optimism. Were the days of the mind-meltingly awful rom-com about an unappealing lead juggling career, family and love, trying to have it all and discovering that she can't, she has to be a wife and a mother, finally over?

The next few months might be dominated by summer blockbusters, but we're also starting to get the festival hits from the last six months: acclaimed indies from Toronto, Sundance and SXSW, films like "Submarine," "Beginners," "The Trip" and "Page One," all land in the next while and a trailer has just debuted for one of the starrier offerings from Park City this year.

Hard to believe that over the course of their red meat-eatin' action careers, Sylvester Stallone and Walter Hill never crossed paths. Hill has directed the likes of Eddie Murphy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and the immortal James Remar, but not once has he been associated with the headstrong star of "Rocky," "Rambo" and "The Expendables." That may change as Hill may be climbing aboard "Headshots," the action picture starring Stallone which was left orphaned after director Wayne Kramer exited over creative differences.

After years of directing heavy dramas like "Open Hearts," "After The Wedding," "Brothers" and most recently, the Oscar winning "In A Better World," helmer Susanne Bier is looking to take a break from heavy drama for a moment and do something lighter instead. Earlier this week it was announced she was set to direct "All You Need Is Love," a romantic comedy, and she's now found her lead actor.

Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn & SNL's Seth Meyers Also Among Ensemble CastIt seems that women -- at least in popular culture -- can never get their life together even if they have a perfect job, great kids and a loving husband. Chick lit and chick flicks have no problem continually driving this message home, pitching dizzy, exhausted women into a world where having to do more than one thing at once seems overwhelming.
