Late last year it was announced that Sean Penn would be following in the footsteps of actors like Liam Neeson and toplining his own European-set action film. And now, THR is reporting that “Taken” helmer Pierre Morel is in negotiations to direct Penn in his own potential franchise with “Prone Gunman.”

While his sister Megan has become something of a saviour for auteurs like John Hillcoat and Paul Thomas Anderson, David Ellison is the flipside to that coin with major stakes in tentpoles like last year’s rousing success, “Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol,” and his Skydance Productions is entering negotiations with “Taken” director Pierre Morel to helm “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.”

After a short, but well-deserved break between 2010’s “Unstoppable” and this past February’s “Safe House,” actor Denzel Washington is back with the force you’d expect from a man who once yelled King Kong “ain’t having sh*t on me” during a heated exchange in “Training Day.” Anyways, he has the Robert Zemeckis-directed drama “Flight” set to land this November, he’s currently shooting the action picture “2 Guns” alongside Mark Wahlberg, and we just had word he could star alongside Will Smith in “Anchorman” director Adam McKay’s remake of “Uptown Saturday Night." And now we have further info on a long-developing project with Washington attached.

It looks like Garry Marshall, in his grand plan to turn every notable day on the calendar into a tedious star-studded rom-com, will have to do without "Bastille Day." That's because the French national holiday is getting the generic action movie treatment, hooray!

'Game Of Thrones' Star Emilia Clarke Circling Female LeadThanks to "Leon" director Luc Besson, the French have proved in recent years that they're able to produce English-language action-movies just as slam-bang and stupid as anything that Hollywood can come up with. Kicking off with the Jet Li vehicle "Kiss of the Dragon" and the Jason Statham series "The Transporter," Besson and co. have nailed the art of making a cheap, quick actioner, chucking in a few B-list American names, financing it through pre-sales, and making a tidy sum of money, helping to launch the careers of directors Louis Leterrier and Pierre Morel, and putting Liam Neeson firmly on the A-list with international smash "Taken."

So, Marvel are done with Kenneth Branagh, or possibly Kenneth Branagh is done with Marvel: if you missed it earlier, "Thor 2" has been officially announced for a July 26, 2013 release date, with star Chris Hemsworth returning (which people seem to think is news: like all the superhero leads, the Australian actor signed an expansive multi-film contract that makes him Marvel's bitch for the next decade or so), but Branagh not sitting in the director's chair, although he may stay on a producing role of some kind.

For a brief time after the release of surprise hit, "Taken," it seemed as though the world was Pierre Morel's oyster. The one-time DoP had cult success with "District 13," and his follow-up, the Liam Neeson starrer, was an enormous worldwide hit, landing the French director at the top of action/sci-fi wishlists, and giving him the plum job of replacing Peter Berg on the adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel "Dune." But things haven't been so smooth since: "Dune" was canceled by Paramount, he didn't land the job of directing Universal's tentpole "Ouija," and his third directorial effort "From Paris With Love" disappointed commercially.

Last we heard, the writing was on the wall for "Dune." It was last November that it was reported that Paramount was given a deadline of this spring (read: now) to get a film into production or risk losing the rights to the film and with nothing having happened since, it's no surprise to now hear the project is dead at the studio.

Earlier last fall, heat began building around a new Sam Raimi-produced project, "Earth Defense Force" (aka "EDF"). With a script from from "Air Force One" screenwriter and "Castle" executive producer Andrew Marlowe, the project drew the attention of Warner Bros. who entered negotiations for the rights and later, Pierre Morel, leaving the stalled "Dune" project, circled the director's chair.

Pierre Morel can't seem to catch a break lately. This month alone he's left two major projects, the running-out-of-time "Dune" currently set up at Paramount (where they are considering putting the albatross into turnaround) and Universal's big screen adaptation of the drunken Halloween board game thingy "Ouija." But in his back pocket has always been another project and it looks like it's picking up some momentum.
