Another Memorial Day weekend come and gone, and here we are: summer has begun. Temperatures are rising all over the place, and you might have trouble finding comfort, let alone sleeping, with all the humidity. You could make like the olden days and take to the air-conditioned cinema houses to beat the heat. With fairy tales, horror flicks, historical epics, there’s plenty of material to keep you in that ice-cold seat, eyes glued to the screen. Take note, however: the gore/scare factor is high this week; these movies probably won’t help you sleep at night.

Review: 'Piranha 3DD' Dutifully Fails To Be In On The Joke

If you're gonna go for it, go for it. That was the philosophy Alexandre Aja pursued for the bleakly funny "Piranha 3D," an orgy of death and dismemberment that indulged in the hedonism of spring break before letting loose swarms of genetically-superior fish that were decidedly playing for keeps. As much as Aja's characters had tongue firmly planted in cheek (see: Jerry O'Connell as Joe Francis), his committment to tearing these characters apart like cheap confetti never wavered, orchestrating a straight-faced massacre that might as well have been "Saving Private Ryan" for the "Jersey Shore" generation. Aja, like the piranhas, saw the youth of today and tasted blood in the water, not so much with a smile as much as a predatory grin.

Despite a very underwhelming North American haul ($25 million), "Piranha 3D" did well enough globally ($83 million) to justify a sequel in the eyes of The Weinstein Company. Due June 1st, "Piranha 3DD" now has a soundtrack to accompany it. Scheduled for a May 29th digital release, the 17-track soundtrack features Bay Area "indietronica" band The Limousines, anthemic pop band All The Right Moves, radio-friendly rockers Amber Pacific and to be honest, a whole bunch of bands we've never heard of. A score album by Elia Camiral from Lakeshore Records can be pre-ordered on Amazon as well, if that floats your boat.

When "Piranha 3D" debuted at the tail end of the summer of 2010, it took people by surprise, with French filmmakers Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur throwing good taste out the window and instead offering a smorgasbord of outré delights (buckets of blood climaxing in a "Saving Private Ryan"-style beach party massacre and several progressive sexual moments, including a slow motion underwater nude ballet and a severed penis being coughed in the audience's face).

While there has been much hand-wringing over native and post-converted 3D, no one in their wildest imagination could have guessed that last summer "Piranha 3D" would take in over $80 million worldwide. While the news kept James Cameron up at night, the smash success of the low brow horror flick threw pundits for a loop, bucking conventional thought that audiences only want high grade, "Avatar"-like experiences if they pay premium dollars to wear those glasses at the multiplex. It turns out, 3D blood and boobs works too.

It seems no one wants to be a summer movie anymore, at least not in July 2013. Yesterday, "Thor 2" moved from its summer date to November 15, 2013 and now, another major movie is changing gears.

Katrina Bowden Also To Be Fish FoodIf you're going to vainly continue a franchise that seems well out-of-steam, might as well stick to continuity. Today's casting announcement seems to confirm that the upcoming "Piranha 3DD" will continue immediately after the events of the last film, with the return of cast members Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer and Christopher Lloyd.

Though it may make James Cameron weep blue "Avatar" tears, the delightfully dumb "Piranha 3D" was a box office hit, taking in over $80 million worldwide which of course means we're getting a quickie sequel. But God bless the filmmakers as they're not trying to reinvent the wheel the second time around, getting a mostly low-rent cast together for a movie that only recently started filming for a November release date.
