The upcoming "Pitch Perfect" is more entertaining than you might think it has any right to be. For all the potential pitfalls that a studio-driven comedy about a capella might bring with it, the Anna Kendrick-starring film is often smarter and funnier than the material might suggest, and at least going by the audience this writer saw it with, it's a big crowd pleaser. It also features a lot of music. And while the official soundtrack does a great job of representing the performances in the movie, there are still lots of songs referenced or mixed that aren't there. But we're here to help.

Good news for awards contenders this year: the field just got a little thinner. Because the potential prestige juggernaut that was "The Big Wedding," an all-star rom-com starring Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried, Ben Barnes, Robin Williams and Topher Grace, the directorial debut of "The Bucket List" writer Justin Zackham (yes, that Paddy Chayefsky of the 21st century) is no longer a 2012 release, as parent studio Lionsgate have moved it from the so-close-you-can-almost-taste-it date of October 26th, to the far-off distant lands of April 26th, 2013, a date that it has all to itself (although "Iron Man 3" hits a week later), and exactly six months from the original release date.

As serious-minded cinephiles who couldn't be persuaded to sit through an episode of "Glee" if the lives of their loved ones were at stake, there is absolutely no way that we kind of secretly want to see "Pitch Perfect." No, sir. Not us. We certainly weren't pleasantly surprised by a trailer that seems to have a little more spark and wit than the average teen movie, and featured what seems to be a killer comic performance by "Bridesmaids" star Rebel Wilson. And there's definitely no way that we'd pay to see the ludicrously talented Anna Kendrick read from the lengthy instruction booklet for a Blu-ray player (although, curiously we did draw the line at "What To Expect When You're Expecting."

“OH SNAP, no she didn’t!,” is what we’d imagine the filmmakers behind the Anna Kendrick-starring “Pitch Perfect” want us to say throughout the majority of the running time for this film, which goes where few films have gone before in an effort to take a “Bring it On”-style comedic riff on a capella groups in college. When Barden University freshman Beca is discovered to have some impressive singing skills by a member of the university’s a cappella squad The Bellas – the school’s all-girl singing group – it really heats up the campus competition between The Bellas and their male rivals.

Since first appearing in Jeffrey Blitz’s fictional film directorial debut, “Rocket Science,” Anna Kendrick has proved herself to be a strong supporting playing in films as varied as the “Twilight” franchise, “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” and “Up In The Air.” She’s now finally stepping into a leading lady role with the comedy “Pitch Perfect.”

Rebel Wilson & Adam Devine Also Join CastSo, can the singing and dancing that everyone seems to like on "Glee" and endless amounts of reality shows ever be translated to the big screen? Well, they tried "Glee: The 3D Concert Movie" this summer and failed miserably, and remember "Hamlet 2"? Yeah, no one cared for that either. But producer Elizabeth Banks and the rest of the people over at Gold Circle Films are hoping their indie effort can be the one that is the exception to the rule.

There is no denying that Anna Kendrick has ascended into the top ranks of young actresses in Hollywood. Already a staple of the "Twilight" franchise, outside the vampires-and-werewolves films she has quickly established herself as a strong supporting player in "Up In The Air," "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" and the forthcoming cancer dramedy "50/50." But that's not all, next year she already has two projects that couldn't be more different, with David Ayer's police pic "End Of Watch" and the ensemble comedy "What To Expect When You're Expecting" on her calendar. But the actress is ready to step into a leading lady role, and her first shot may some require some singing as well.

In the world of "Glee" and "High School Musical," of comedies about spelling bees and debate teams and cheerleaders and frat houses, it's almost staggering that we've managed to go through the history of cinema without a film focusing on college a capella groups. But fret no longer! Nature abhors a vacuum, and as such, and hot on the heels of that one scene in "The Social Network," a comedy focusing on the backing-free singing groups is now in the works.
