'Oz' & 'Frankenweenie' Presentations Are BriefAt this weekend’s D23 convention, Disney hopes to capitalize on the excitement around must-see projects like “The Avengers,” Pixar’s “Brave” and “The Muppets” by presenting a look at their entire slate of releases across all divisions. They opened with a lengthy animation presentation from John Lasseter that was heavy on Pixar (“Planes,” “Brave,” “Monsters University” and two new project announcements) and concluded with a Marvel presentation that, while brief, still managed to set fanboys hearts aflutter with a first extended look at “The Avengers.” In-between Disney faced their greatest challenge in holding audience attention for looks at some lesser known projects.

Disney’s D23 Showing Strong On The Animation SideThis morning Disney rolled out a large slate of announcements as part of its D23 Fan Expo, which the mouse house hopes will develop into their answer to Comic-Con. And considering the Saturday sellout at the Anaheim Convention Center, they might really be onto something. The nearly three-hour presentation was heavy on animation and the presence of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios head John Lasseter.

Welcome to the new Pixar. With "Cars 2" driving its way to nearly $70 million in ticket sales this weekend, with a strong foreign haul expected, the worst-reviewed film in Pixar's history is on track to become studio’s tenth $200 million domestic grosser and more importantly, will keep selling related merchandise, which has already soared into the billions of dollars. And while last year's "Toy Story 3" seemingly brought that franchise to a poignant close, it looks like Buzz and Woody are going to be gearing up for yet another adventure.

The numbers on “Cars 2” don’t actually matter, except for the stat-hounds regularly following the weekly box office noise (us!). “Cars 2” exists to facilitate Disney’s biggest merchandising cash cow, a multi-billion (annually!) property that needs no further justification. As Pixar seems like a studio that hopes to branch out into more ambitious directions (in theory), they will need something to keep the lights on when, and if, they should fail. Even if the reviews continue to be the worst ever received by a Pixar film, the “Cars” franchise will live on.

We're be decidedly un-enamored of Pixar's recent approach to their features: this year's "Cars 2" looks, if anything, worse than its predecessor, and being jammed between last year's "Toy Story 3" and 2013's "Monsters University," the studio, one of the true bastions of creativity in the industry, seems to be heading towards the sequel-happy approach of every other big company, with next year's "Brave" being the only confirmed original project on their slate (although we've got no doubt that there are plenty of other films in the works), and big name directors like Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird being wooed away to the live-action world for films like "John Carter" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

Soundtrack Includes Weezer, Robbie Williams & Brad PaisleyOK, so we know that Disney makes literally billions and billions of dollars a year off merchandise for the original "Cars," so the sequel was something of a no-brainer for them, but do they really need to sell it this hard? Apple has debuted the latest trailer for "Cars 2" on their site, which marks the 25th such entry for the film in the last year. Admittedly, most have been brief video introductions to seemingly every character glimpsed in the film, but it still seems like overkill.
