What D23 Says About The State Of Disney Feature Animation

The big news out of last weekend's D23 Expo in Anaheim, a kind of Comic-Con for Disney, was the lack of news relating to the studio's highly anticipated "Star Wars: Episode VII." There wasn't any kind of announcement—no release date or subtitle or confirmation of actors who are scheduled to return (and those who will be sitting this one out). In fact, the silence around 'Star Wars' was so deafening that many lost sight of just how much the studio divulged about its upcoming slate of animated features. Not only did they map out the movies that the studio will be delivering through 2016, but they also showcased what will be the pattern for Disney animated features for years and years to come. Only nobody noticed because they were too busy looking for that Death Star.

Matt Damon, Elysium
Four new films opened this weekend, joining an already full box office top ten: a dystopian epic actioner, a raunchy adult comedy, a kid-friendly cartoon, and a family-friendly action-myth story sequel. Duking it out for the top spot, the R-rated films took the lead while the PGs held their own in a crowded marquee.

Billions of dollars flood the Walt Disney Company every year, thanks to the toys, videogames, DVDs, clothing, gummy vitamins and bed sheets associated with their "Cars" franchise. What originated as a single Pixar movie (2006's "Cars") has expanded beyond the sequel (2011's "Cars 2") and short films and "land" at the Disney California Adventure theme park (whose signature ride, Radiator Springs Racers, is one of the most impressive attractions in the whole Disneyland complex). It's now it's own universe, one with just as many spin-off and sequel possibilities as such high profile Disney modules as "Star Wars" or Marvel. This is made very clear in "Planes" mere seconds after the shimmery Disney castle disappears and an odd title card emerges, before anything else, that reads, simply: "World of 'Cars,'" which, depending on your age and demographic, is either a promise or a warning. Either way, "Planes" is just the beginning. Buckle up.

August’s animated feature “Planes” is kind of an odd duck. The world of “Planes” was introduced in a "Cars"-based Pixar short film called “Air Mater,” which literally ends with lovable tow truck Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) looking into the camera and saying something like “Boy, someone should make a movie based on this.” (The short and feature also share at least one character.) The movie has a number of Pixar hallmarks (including a cameo from John Ratzenberger and an executive producer credit for Pixar bigwig John Lasseter), and is being advertised as “From the World Above ‘Cars,’” but the Pixar name is nowhere to be found on the finished film, and DisneyToon Studios handled the animation duties, which are stylistically incredibly similar to the work Pixar did on “Cars.” As you can see, it’s all very confusing. But hey! There’s a new clip! And it at least establishes that “Planes” is going to be very, very pretty. And maybe a little offensive.

Yes, while they do have some original stuff on the way -- "The Good Dinosaur," "The Inside Out" and The Untitled Movie about The Día de los Muertos" (read up on'em here), today reminds us that sometimes it's all C.R.E.A.M. at Pixar. Earlier today we got the release date locked down for "Finding Dory" aka "Finding Nemo 2" and now, a movie that was originally going to be fill bargin bins on DVD, is now trying to prove it's multiplex material.

When Disney first announced that there was going to be a spin-off to everyone’s least favorite Pixar franchise (“Cars”), the news wasn’t particularly exciting, or surprising, for that matter. The "Cars" franchise rakes in billions of dollars in merchandise sales, so we could be getting "Cars"-related movies for the rest of our lifetime. Well, a new theatrical trailer for the spin-off “Planes” has arrived online, leaving you to decide for yourself whether or not it’ll be worth seeing with your kids this summer.

Well this is somewhat surprising: “Planes,” the direct-to-video spin-off of Disney/Pixar’s “Cars” films, is now getting a wide theatrical release next summer. It will hit theaters on August 9th, alongside Neill Blomkamp’s Matt Damon-led sci-fi extravaganza “Elysium” and “We’re the Millers,” a comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston that is being directed by “Dodgeball” helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber. “Planes” was originally supposed to debut on home video in the fall (a European theatrical release was always planned). The movie is either really, really good or must be tracking really, really well with the guys in Disney Consumer Products. Either way, it’s coming.

Well, D23 has come and gone, and with Disney's insistence on controlling the message suffocating any spontaneity and excitement -- coupled by a distinct lack of any real news other than some details about the new Pixar films -- the event was a bit of let down. However, Disney/Pixar did let a couple more morsels spill regarding the previously announced "Toy Story" short that will precede "The Muppets."

Disney’s D23 Showing Strong On The Animation SideThis morning Disney rolled out a large slate of announcements as part of its D23 Fan Expo, which the mouse house hopes will develop into their answer to Comic-Con. And considering the Saturday sellout at the Anaheim Convention Center, they might really be onto something. The nearly three-hour presentation was heavy on animation and the presence of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios head John Lasseter.
