Catherine Hardwicke
Catherine Hardwicke is insane. This isn't a dig. It's a fact. Like the sky is blue and water is wet. The director of "Thirteen" and the first "Twilight" has a delightfully off-kilter aura that is positively infectious. After helping to create that blockbuster franchise (and, honestly, what would those movies be without her casting?), she directed a big studio movie for Warner Bros. ("Red Riding Hood") before going back to what she does best: dramatize the lives of young people on the edge. The result? "Plush," which after a brief theatrical run is out on DVD this week.

The first five minutes of "Plush," the new musical murder mystery from Catherine Hardwicke (who started the "Twilight" franchise with a bang, before getting shoved to the side for a succession of anonymous filmmakers), are misleading in a pretty profound way. In this introductory sequence, an unseen figure ties a young woman to a chair. She is gagged and helpless, although her positioning and the slick vinyl restraints suggest something even kinkier. The shadowy figure dumps a whole truckload of rocks on top of her while she's bound, suffocating her under the stones. Bright lights illuminate the ghastly tableau. This is like something out of a "Saw" sequel, especially since nothing even remotely spooky happens for the next 45 minutes. Torture porn, it's not.

It has been well over a year since we heard anything about Catherine Hardwicke's rock 'n roll flick "Plush" but not only is it in the can, it's hitting theaters in less than a month. Really. So it's no surprise that a wealth of promo material is now hitting the internet, with the teaser trailer, poster and a batch of new pics all surfacing for the movie.

Just a day after “Kick-Ass 2” solidified its existence further by casting Donald Faison in the role of Dr. Gravity, the comic book adaptation can safely count another cast member on board, this time with a returning actress from the first film, while in other news two other independent productions have found their leading ladies.

First, recently renamed Arnold Schwarzenegger project “Breacher” (formerly “Ten”) – which will see the muscleman joined by writer-director David Ayer and co-stars Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello and Dawn Olivieri – has found a way to inject some more estrogen into the project in the form of actress Malin Akerman (“Watchmen,” “Wanderlust”). Akerman is currently in negotiations to join this hard-boiled crime iteration of mystery writer Agatha Christie’s “Ten Little Indians,” with the film set to follow the tale of an elite DEA task force who rob an underground drug cartel while operating under the guise of a warranted raid. They think they’re in the clear, until they all start being bumped off one-by-one. Akerman will lend her acting chops to the DEA team in Ayer’s latest cop drama/thriller picture.

We're sure Catherine Hardwicke and Evan Rachel Wood are still pals, but sometimes scheduling or a variety of other reasons keep two people from working together. Earlier this year it looked like the "Thirteen" star and director were going to reunite on "Plush," but alas, things don't seem to have worked out. But another capable star is looking to come off the bench and sub in.

Seems like Catherine Hardwicke ("Thirteen," "Lords of Dogtown") is trying to hone in on a grittier return behind the camera. After "Twilight" and "Red Riding Hood," the helmer was linked to an adaptation of the potentially franchise-spawning "The Maze Runner," but soon focused her attentions on troubled-teen tale "The Bitch Posse" and a biopic of Swedish boxer Bo "Bosse" Högberg starring former partners Noomi and Bo Rapace.
