The word "art" within the context of cinema can sometimes be embarrassing to use. Much of the "cinema," movies or film we consume is consumer-driven -- well-calibrated, committee-made popcorn to entertain the masses. And indie films made by auteurs -- cinema as recently defined by Steven Soderbergh (and arguably accepted by all) -- are often artfully made, but still doggedly linear and narratively conventional. That's OK, all forms of movies have their place in the world, and as Danny Boyle recently intimated, they are symbiotic -- we need both forms, the blockbuster, the indie, the escapism and the esoteric. No arguments there, but "art," like the term "genius" should be, in this writer's opinion, sparingly used.

Almost a year ago, we dubbed Carlos Reygadas’ “Post Tenebras Lux” one of the most anticipated films of the Cannes Film Festival and we were proven right when Reygadas won Best Director for the film at the festival. Although the picture did not please all, our critic at Cannes was not especially impressed. Such varying opinions only make the film more intriguing, especially given the Mexican filmmaker’s reputation for using non-professional actors and shooting very raw, explicit sex scenes.

Telluride is wrapped, Venice heads into its final days and TIFF is just about to gear up, but the festival season is far from over. The BFI London Film Festival has dropped their slate this morning and not only is it pulling titles from all those fests, it has nabbed the best of Sundance and Cannes as well for what is a greatest hits package of sorts for cinephiles.

When discussing Carlos Reygadas’ “Post Tenebras Lux,” comparisons to “The Tree of Life” come easily, though Reygadas’s film is as far from a paean to God as it gets. In fact, while Malick’s movie has a sweeping, hands-on perspective on enlightenment and God, Reygadas’ (“Silent Light,” “Battle in Heaven”) has a brazen, ostentatiously alienating and mostly detached view of redemption and Satan.

A week from today, the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival will be getting underway on the south coast of France, opening with Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," and as ever, it's possibly the biggest date in the cinephile calendar, with a host of hotly-anticipated films set to premiere over the ten days that follow. A jury headed up by Nanni Moretti, and also including Andrea Arnold, Ewan McGregor, Alexander Payne, Diane Kruger and Jean-Paul Gaultier will have to decide which of over twenty films to award the Palme d'Or to, but while the competition will be typically fierce in competition, there's plenty of gems to find in the Directors' Fortnight, Un Certain Regard and Critics' Week sidebars too.
