There was a brief moment where August still seemed viable for blockbuster pictures. Generally, the month has been viewed as the weak sister of the hot season, usually a dumping ground for once-promising projects that fell by the wayside, gathering little attention from students preparing to return to school. A string of August hits over the last decade changed that, but here we are, back to the dog days. Last summer was plagued by low attendance for films like "30 Minutes or Less," "Conan the Barbarian" and "Fright Night," and if this weekend is anything to go by, with "The Expendables 2" handily defeating an onslaught of unattractive new product, we're in for even lower grosses. In fact, it's the first weekend in a decade where no new film opened to over $7 million. Ouch.

As another summer comes to a close, we can look back at all the fare this mega blockbuster season has brought us while finishing off with a few more popcorn flicks. Nothing so big as “The Expendables 2,” mind you, but still plenty of big name stars and CGI to look forward to this weekend. So with Labor Day just around the corner, take some time to bask in the last rays of August sun as you bike along the Hudson River or drive across the country in your convertible. Or, for those who’ve had enough UV rays for this year, board yourself up in a haunted house with a zombie or two. There’s plenty of fun to be had in this last summer go-round.

In an age where green screen is over-utilized, and costs are managed by shooting in the Midwest, Canada, or even Eastern Europe, there’s something classy and maybe even downright quaint about a film entirely set on the streets of New York City. Permit restrictions have long ended the days of most low-budget, scrappy productions making the city their home, so it’s probably worth acknowledging that the producers of “Premium Rush” spent a good amount of cash securing the locations for their pavement-pounding chase thriller. Regardless, there’s something refreshingly low-fi about rubber against the pavement of the world’s greatest city, and for a moment you forget that “Premium Rush” is a big, dumb, studio star attraction.

Basically, for the rest of the summer, there's "The Dark Knight Rises" and then, Everything Else. Christopher Nolan's superhero flick will pretty much tower over and dominate the rest of the competition as the blockbuster season winds down, but one movie is hoping that if you like what you see of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Gotham City, you'll want to him again in New York, in the slightly less heroic role of...bike courier.

With "The Dark Knight Rises" around the corner, lensing on his directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" underway and "Looper" and "Lincoln" due to be unveiled this fall, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is up for quite the year. And there's one lesser, JGL-starring vehicle that's certainly making the most of his presence: David Koepp's"Premium Rush," which now has a fresh new poster. The film looks, at best, like a fun little thriller, and sees the actor play a bike messenger who gets hold of a the wrong package with Michael Shannon on his tail. The film hits theaters on August 24th.

Oh hey, remember "Premium Rush"? That was the movie that was originally slated to open in January and then was pushed back to the ass-end of summer. How how much of a priority is this for Columbia Pictures? Well, the new trailer barely runs 90 seconds long and features mostly footage we saw in the previous, longer trailer. Hmm.

So, a vote of confidence or changing out one dubious date for another? January is considered a cinematic dumping ground, but the end of August is not much better. What arrived at the end of the summer this year? "Colombiana," "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," "Our Idiot Brother" and "The Debt" and all were middling efforts at the box office, except for the latter which offered a rare breath of adult entertainment in a blockbuster season. But, Sony are moving their Joseph Gordon-Levitt led "Premium Rush" from January 13, 2012 to August 24, 2012 instead. And there's one pretty obvious reason why: "The Dark Knight Rises."

It takes a special breed to be a bike courier. Part gear head, part adrenaline junkie and ready to throw themselves into daily mess of gridlock, getting a package from A to B on two wheels isn't a task for just anybody. While we've seen more than enough thrillers on four wheels, "Premium Rush" has to be one of the first in which a bicycle is the preferred method of transport. And in the first trailer for the Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle, it looks like it's aiming strictly for B-movie thrills.
