If at first you don't succeed.... The big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame Smith's best-selling literary mash up "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" has tried and tried again to get made. David O. Russell, Mike White, and most "recently" "Lars And The Real Girl" and "Fright Night" director Craig Gillespie have all come and gone, trying to get the movie off the ground at Lionsgate with little success. And while names like Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, Mia Wasikowska and Blake Lively were all mentioned/desired/wished for at various points, a slightly different approach is being taken now.

In the last seven years, if you tracked every project filmmaker David O. Russell was linked to, you’d likely find over a dozen films that he was seemingly intended to direct. Even in the two years since “The Fighter,” Russell’s been ostensibly attached to myriad projects -- “Mission” with Brad Pitt,” “American Sniper” with Bradley Cooper and a biopic of former Rhode Island Mayor Buddy Cianci, just to name a few.

Try as they might, Lionsgate just can't seem to get "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" off the ground. The project started in the hands of David O. Russell, for a brief moment had Mike White attached, and then seemed to be ready to go with "Lars And The Real Girl" and "Fright Night" director Craig Gillespie. Gillespie, as recently as this summer, talked excitedly about shooting the film next year. But this zombie flick just added one more body to the count as Deadline reveals that Gillespie has amicably split from the movie.

Here we go again. Despite names like Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson and Mia Wasikowska all being tossed around as potential leads for the forever-gestating "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" the film is yet to find an Elizabeth, and today, yet another contender has emerged.

Plus Her Work On 'Pride And Prejudice And Zombies' & More“Fright Night” screenwriter Marti Noxon knows a thing or two about vampires. As a writer and executive producer for Joss Whedon’s much beloved “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” she oversaw all manner of things that go bump in the night. She returns to similarly funny/scary terrain for this weekend's "Fright Night" remake, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Anton Yelchin as a high school kid who suspects that Jerry (Colin Farrell), the dark-haired stranger that moved in next door, might be a vampire.

When “Lars and the Real Girl” director Craig Gillespie was first tapped to direct the remake of ‘80s camp horror classic “Fright Night,” a collective WTF seemed to ring out from the film community at large. Of course, Gillespie also directed the studio comedy “Mr. Woodcock,” which has even less in common with 'Lars,' but word on the “Fright Night” remake has been generally favorable and clearly Lionsgate was impressed enough to offer Gillespie their highly anticipated adaptation of the literary/horror genre mash-up “Pride and Prejudice with Zombies.”

For a pitch so simple (Jane Austen + The Undead = bidding war!), the adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" has had some problems actually getting made. Originally set to team Natalie Portman and "The Fighter" writer-director David O. Russell, both talent jumped ship, thanks to, respectively, pregnancy and a career resurgence, and backers Lionsgate have subsequently gone through half of Hollywood trying to get the film on screen: Mike White was briefly going to direct, and names from Scarlett Johannson, Bradley Cooper and Tilda Swinton to David Slade, Mike Newell and Christopher Smith were all mentioned as possibilities for some kind of involvement at various points.

Gillian Anderson and Mark Williams Also In CastOne of the hottest properties around Hollywood in the last few years has been Seth Grahame-Smith's "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies," a revisionist take on Jane Austen's classic romance that chucks the undead into the mix. But despite being in development for a couple of years now, the film's made slow progress, burning through two directors, David O. Russell and Mike White, before landing its current helmer, "Lars and The Real Girl"'s Craig Gillespie, and it's yet to officially attach any cast members, despite the rumored interest of Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper and others. Backers Lionsgate had better get a move on, because it looks like their zombies-in-corset shtick may get beaten to the box office by a low-budget rival, one that seems to have assembled an extremely prestigious cast.
