Gillian Anderson and Mark Williams Also In CastOne of the hottest properties around Hollywood in the last few years has been Seth Grahame-Smith's "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies," a revisionist take on Jane Austen's classic romance that chucks the undead into the mix. But despite being in development for a couple of years now, the film's made slow progress, burning through two directors, David O. Russell and Mike White, before landing its current helmer, "Lars and The Real Girl"'s Craig Gillespie, and it's yet to officially attach any cast members, despite the rumored interest of Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper and others. Backers Lionsgate had better get a move on, because it looks like their zombies-in-corset shtick may get beaten to the box office by a low-budget rival, one that seems to have assembled an extremely prestigious cast.

Compares Upcoming Film To Tim Burton's 'Sleepy HollowWith Craig Gillespie now locked down for "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," everyone can now focus on the actual film rather than the endless process of finding a director. And it didn't take long for the first interview about the film to hit as Gillespie recently sat down with EW to talk about the upcoming film and while David O. Russell -- once attached to direct, though he left over budgetary concerns -- has long since left the project, his imprint will still be felt as the script he penned will still be used for the movie.

With David O. Russell and Mike White both having temporarily filled and subsequently vacated the director's chair for the gestating adaptation of "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" the hunt is still on and more names continue to surface. Last month, Craig Gillespie -- who helmed "Lars And the Real Girl" and the upcoming "Fright Night" -- was in talks for the gig and now a directing/producing duo are throwing their hats in the ring.

With Over 20 Zombie-Related Films In Production In Hollywood, Humanizing The Undead Appears To Be The Next TrendSick of bloodsuckers and woe-is-me vampire tales? Inundated by the genre, its addiction and immortality themes that played out in "Twilight" and that are ubiquitous in TV on "True Blood," "The Vampire Diaries" and myriad other movies and episodic shows? While vampires and the goth aesthetic that surrounds them have certainly became mainstream, the mythic tales aren't likely going anywhere anytime soon, but a new monster genre may be fighting for creature hegemony on screen in the next few years.

If "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" doesn't get rolling soon, it'll officially start to attract the label "troubled project." Based on the best-selling genre-blender from Seth Grahame-Smith (who's clearly found his niche, also penning both the source material and the script for "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"), it melds Jane Austen's classic romantic comedy with the undead, and was swiftly snapped up by Richard Kelly's Darko Entertainment, Lionsgate and Natalie Portman, who was set to star, produce, and even write a draft of the script.

One big project that many people are eager to see leap to the big screen has been moving along in fits and starts, without picking up enough steam to move forward. "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" has had an interesting development history so far. In late 2009, David O. Russell was brought on board to write and direct the picture, with Natalie Portman producing and set to star. Then in October last year, Russell left the picture, with Portman following suit shortly afterward (but staying on to produce). In November, Mike White filled in the empty director's chair only to vacate the position last week, just over two months after he signed on. At the time Russell left the picture, it appeared he was simply switching over to one of his own projects, the road-trip dramedy "Old St. Louis," but recently, he reveals he had some other reasons for leaving.

Well, that didn't last long. Only two months after surprise hire Mike White took over as director on Lionsgate's adaptation of "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies," replacing the newly redeemed David O Russell (who's spent the intervening time attaching himself to half-a-dozen projects, most notably the video game adaptation "Uncharted"), Deadline bring news that the director and Lionsgate have parted company on the project, based on Seth Grahame-Smith's book, which introduces the undead into Jane Austen's classic romance.
