So perhaps the blockbusting sturm und drang of “Iron Man 3” has you slavering for more KA-BLAMMO, in which case our Most Anticipated Summer Blockbusters is the article for you. If, however, you're already getting a slight tension headache at the prospect of weeks upon interminable weeks of tentpole releases and the din of clashing opinions that attends the redistribution of billions of dollars of wealth, never fear. The gods of counterprogramming have been especially kind this year, and there's a wide selection of upcoming, smaller-budgeted, lesser-distributed gems in which the only things that collide are intersecting lives, the only ticking time bombs are repressed emotions, the only things that break are hearts, and the only things that blow up are grandiose expectations, right in some sad sack's face. You are also much more likely to get some full-on nudity.

While technically speaking, David Gordon Green's indie "Prince Avalanche" is a remake of the Icelandic film "Either Way," to box it into that category alone is to miss the point. Shot pretty much in secret last year, and unveiled to great acclaim at Sundance, the filmmaker's latest is yet another sharp turn in a career that remains both exciting and unpredictable. And for those of you who couldn't make it to park city, the first trailer has arrived.

The Tribeca Film Festival has unveiled a big batch of their 2013 slate, including the World Documentary, Feature Competition, Viewpoints, Spotlight, Midnight and Storyscapes line-ups. In its 12th year, Tribeca boasts an international, star-studded program that will welcome films that span the globe.

Filmmaker David Gordon Green has had a deeply eclectic career of omnivorous tastes thus far. To perhaps best demonstrate the polar extremes, the 37-year-old director (who has already made nine features) has had films produced by Terrence Malick ("Undertow") and Judd Apatow ("Pineapple Express"). His body of work thus far has covered intimate indie dramas featuring children ("George Washington"), broad comedies ("The Sitter"), adult dramas ("Snow Angels"), and high concept absurdist swords and sorcerer pictures ("Your Highness"). His oeuvre has run the gamut of styles, tones and genres.

First festival of the year? Done and dusted. Every year, the movie industry heads en masse to Utah for the Sundance Film Festival, Robert Redford's celebration of independent cinema, which has become increasingly important over the years, in the hope of uncovering the next big thing. Last year's festival brought "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which went on to be one of the best-reviewed films of the year, and a Best Picture nominee at the Academy Awards, and while there wasn't a singular breakout in the same way, the festival was certainly in good form.

Filmmaker David Gordon Green's latest effort, "Prince Avalanche," is getting some of the best reviews of his career. A hit at Sundance, that just got picked up by Magnolia Pictures, the unusual, poetically observational pas de deux comedy is funny, but also unexpectedly moving and human (you can read our review here). Starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch as estranged Beckett-ian odd-couple road crew workers in Texas, the film charts their fractious personal dynamics, their existential uncertainties, and perhaps most impressively, the way they come to ultimately empathize and bond with one another.

When it was first announced last summer that David Gordon Green had gone ahead a shot a movie in secret with Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, we didn't know what to think. A remake of the Icelandic film "Either Way" which nobody (who isn't in Iceland) had really seen anyway, the question was whether or not it was going to be another comic goof, or perhaps something closer to the mood and tone of his earlier work. Well, it turns out its both of those things.

It's the summer of 1988 and a violent wildfire has swept through Texas, destroying 43,000 acres and some 16,000 homes. In the wake of this horrific devastation -- a freak of nature that no experts can explain -- two highway road crew workers spend the season in isolation, painting and repairing the roads that lie alongside these ravaged forests. Disciplined to a fault, Alvin (Paul Rudd) is perhaps too tightly wound for his own good and has a myopic idea of what a man should be. The boss of this operation, he loves the solitude the job affords him, and being away from the nearby (unnamed) big city. His girlfriend however, isn't entirely sold on the idea. Lance (Emile Hirsch), his partner and polar opposite, is a hopeless, emotionally immature dumbass. He lives for the weekend, getting wasted and getting laid. In fact, the only reason he has this job is because he's the brother of Madison, Alvin's girlfriend.
