We're now less than a month until Oscar night, and the next few weeks will feature a steady drip of guild awards and other precursors, leading up to big shindig on February 24th. And the crystal ball is staring to get a bit more clear on who will walk away with some statues on Oscar night.

After a bit of a breather from awards season due to the Sundance Film Festival (in recent years, Oscar noms are announced during the festival, but the Academy moved it up this year), barely minutes elapsed between the Sundance awards ceremony and the first of a coming wave of precursors awards ceremonies.

We've had such a nice time getting drunker and fatter over the holiday period that we almost thought there was an awards season on. It's been a few weeks since the last big precursor nominations, so a quiet status quo has set in, now all the films are in theaters somewhere ("Zero Dark Thirty" doesn't go wide til next week, it should be said). So it almost took us by surprise that the Producers Guild Awards nominations were announced today.

Let's get the other stuff out of the way first. Yes, the Best Picture frontrunners you've expected all during the awards season -- "The Artist," "The Descendants," "The Help," "Midnight In Paris" -- have all earned PGA Award nominations for the top movie prize, the Darry F. Zanuck Producer Of The Year Award. But as always, it's the surprises that are the most fun, and this year, the PGA has a quite a few up their sleeve.

Yawn, another random awards ceremony from yet another industry group, right? Guess again. Last year, when the Academy opened up the Best Picture field to ten nominees, so did the The Producers Guild of America, and nine out of their ten nominees ended up getting Oscar nods as well. So if you're looking for how the Oscar nods will play out when they're announced in a few weeks, this is a pretty strong indicator.
