James Cameron Wanted To Make 'Aliens 5' With Ridley Scott, Says 'Prometheus' "Didn't Add Up Logically"

Alien 5, Scott, Cameron
You probably remember that at one point in the early aughts, Ridley Scott wanted to return to the 'Alien' franchise. This is years before “Prometheus” took shape and this version would have essentially been a more traditional “Aliens 5” with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, and the alien battle taking place on Earth. But the “Aliens Vs. Predator” series not only stole the idea, but in the eyes of Scott, it sullied the franchise and he didn’t want anything to do with it. Though, they did consider it regardless for a while. "We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the fifth alien film]," Weaver told MTV in 2008. "Ridley said that right away when we first talked about [a fifth film]." But in the end he wiped his hands clean of it all for years until he found the right way to reboot the series with the prequel-like “Prometheus.”

Prometheus
Well, that didn’t last too long. 20th Century Fox announced a rash of future dates last year going as far as 2018. The big eye-grabber was a trio of super hero films, “The Wolverine 2,” a sequel to “The Fantastic Four” that hasn’t even begun shooting yet and an Untitled Marvel Mystery movie for summer 2018, which has still not been revealed.

Land Of The Lost
Yeah, we know. "Prometheus" is so two years ago, but after the Oscars last night and the extensive coverage that has followed, you might need a palate cleanser. And this is a good way to go.

Sean Young Says She Should've Had The Role Of Vickers In 'Prometheus'

Prometheus Sean Young Charlize Theron
Sean Young hasn't had the easiest career in the world. One great role—as Rachel in Ridley Scott's “Blade Runner”—will stay with us forever, but her wider career never really took off the way you might have expected it to after starring in such a legendary film. Young's part in “Wall Street” was cut from substantial to pretty minor, and a horse-riding injury got her fired from Tim Burton's “Batman” and replaced with Kim Basinger; she was then cast in Warren Beatty's “Dick Tracy” before being fired from that too. The year after that—we're in 1991 now, almost ten years after “Blade Runner,” without having had another major role—she won two acting Razzies for the same movie, playing twins in “A Kiss Before Dying.” Since then, she hasn't had a lot of high profile work.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that "Prometheus 2" started to become more of a reality, as "Transcendence" writer Jack Paglen got hired to pen the script. And, while it's a long way off on Ridley Scott's calendar (he's doing that Moses movie next for a 2014 release), those of you anxious or perhaps just curious where the story might go next (and what else there is to explore in that world) might want to find out where your local comic shop is.

Welcome to Hollywood, Jack Paglen. The writer has seen a quick ascension up the Hollywood food chain, thanks to his 2012 Black List placing script for "Transcendence," which is now being made into a Wally Pfister-directed, Christopher Nolan-produced, Johnny Depp-starring movie. Not bad. And for his next trick? He's jumping on board what could be the most difficult sequel in development.

BRAAAM! 10 Trailers That Steal The Inception sound
"What's the most resilient parasite? An idea." Little did Christopher Nolan know when he wrote that line, he’d need to add an addendum: an idea that keeps getting pickpocketed over and over again until it loses meaning and ownership, and becomes simply background noise to the general cultural conversation. It's appropriate, when you think about it, and something that Cobb (and team Nolan) would likely appreciate, that the memory of this ubiquitous sound's origins are slowly fading away. The Hans Zimmer-composed ominous pitched-down “Inception” horn blast, known as “The 'Inception' BRAAAM" (number of 'r's and 'a's may vary) has been resilient indeed, an idea homaged, appropriated and straight-up nicked time and time again since its... wait for it... inception.

Do You Have An Idea For 'Prometheus 2'? A "Freaking Out" Fox Probably Wants To Hear It

If there is one (potenital) franchise that continues to be a muddle of confused ideas, it's "Prometheus." We'll spare you the blow-by-blow (again), but generally speaking, Jon Spaihts wrote a script that was a (more) direct prequel to "Alien" (including facehuggers) like had been initially planned, and then Damon Lindelof was brought it and it became the movie you saw last summer (you can read about some of the differences here). But for all the supposed mystery of "Prometheus," Ridley Scott wasted no opportunity to explain away everything and even toss in a loose tie to "Blade Runner" because why the fuck not. So needless to say, the waters have become a bit muddied, and Fox is reportedly none too pleased.

One of the most bickered about movies of last year was Ridley Scott's "Alien" pseudo-prequel "Prometheus," a gaudy, lumbering hulk of a movie with more moving parts than your father's Chevy, it was a film that posed just as many questions as it answered and whose elliptical nature allured as many moviegoers as it repelled. Well, it was still something of a hit, and it appears work is moving ahead on a sequel, at least according to "Prometheus" leading lady Noomi Rapace.

Keeping in line with the newly developing trend of Hollywood types calling out movies, the always talkative Quentin Tarantino has now weighed in on last summer's divisive sci-fi spectacle "Prometheus," and well, let's start with the good stuff.
