Werner Herzog, retrospective
It was 2011 when we first attempted our own "Fitzcarraldo"-like endeavor in writing a comprehensive retrospective on the films of the notoriously prolific Werner Herzog. Since then, not only has he added six or so more titles to his filmography, he's been feverishly at work on the seventh—the much-anticipated "Queen of the Desert" which we were hoping to see pop up on a Fall festival announcement list, but no news there yet... However, to tide us all over, today Shout Factory are releasing a limited edition, highly covetable collection of sixteen Herzog films on Blu-ray, and that has given us the excuse to go back and relook, update and generally spruce up our retrospective (which includes all sixteen of those, incidentally). And that's something we're going to do pretty much any chance we get, being huge fans of the utterly unique, brazenly individual German-born director.

Werner Herzog, Queen of The Desert
German filmmaker Werner Herzog is on the brain today. The 71-year-old filmmaker is about to celebrate the release of the superb Shout Factory boxset "Herzog: The Collection" and he’s got a new film waiting in the wings. Titled “Queen Of The Desert," the film features the filmmaker’s most starry cast to date: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, “Homeland” star Damian Lewis and many more. The film chronicles the events of Gertrude Bell's life, a British explorer, traveler, archaeologist and political officer. And apparently it’s done and in the can.

Nosferatu The Vampyre
For many reasons, Werner Herzog’s 1979 vampire tale “Nosferatu the Vampyre” is a classic effort in the prolific filmmaker’s body of work, not least of which because it features Klaus Kinski, Herzog’s legendary muse and tempestuous collaborator, at his most tranquil and genuinely creepy. “It was clear there would never be a vampire of his caliber ever again,” Herzog said of Kinski at L.A.’s Cinefamily last night, where the little-seen German language version of the film begins a weeklong 35mm run today. “I do not need to see the vampire films of the future. I still know Kinski will be the best, at least for four or five centuries.”

Brit actor Damian Lewis has been in the game for a while now but it's probably fair to say that American audiences probably didn't pay much attention until he popped up as Nicholas Brody in Showtime's hit "Homeland." Now the Golden Globe and Emmy winning actor is using the bounce that that kind of hardware provides to book a gig working with Werner Herzog and Nicole Kidman.

Like a mirage that seems to vanish in the arid air, Naomi Watts has departed Werner Herzog’s new film, “Queen of the Desert,” but been replaced by someone of equally impressive star magnitude in Nicole Kidman. The news comes out of the Toronto International Film Festival, which is where all news should be coming out of this week. The film co-stars James Franco and Robert Pattinson and tells the story of real-life 20th century explorer Gertrude Bell. Expect lots of sand and those old timey explorer helmets.

James Franco
Greenlight power is everything, and it often requires a top-shelf or name-brand cast to light the fuse. Werner Herzog seemingly nailed it with the power trio of Robert Pattinson, Naomi Watts and Jude Law for his would-be next narrative feature, "Queen of the Desert" -- the true story of Gertrude Bell (Watts), the traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. So this should be more than enough, no? But with what one assumes could be expensive location shoots in far off locations outside the U.S., "Queen of the Desert" hasn't really moved forward. In fact, it seemed very up in the air in the last few months. Watts herself suggested the movie was on hold and Jude Law told us in a recent interview that he was likely unable to participate likely because his scheduling window had closed.

Jude Law is on a bit of a hot streak right now. After his transformed turn as Keira Knightley's cuckolded husband Karenin in Joe Wright's sublime "Anna Karenina," he's now taking on the lead role as a psyschiatrist caught in a mystery in Stephen Soderbergh's "Side Effects," opening on February 8th. We recently caught up with the actor in Los Angeles to chat about "Side Effects," and he also dropped a few hints about some of his upcoming and rumored projects, including Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel," Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert," and a potential third "Sherlock Holmes" film.

It's coming on four years since Werner Herzog's last narrative feature – 2009's "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done" – and it looks like we're in for an even longer wait. Initially slated to start shooting in March in Morocco with Naomi Watts, Robert Pattinson and Jude Law, Herzog's biopic of Gertrude Bell – traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century – in "Queen Of The Desert," seems to be on hold.

Well, we're breathing a bit of a sigh of relief. Just over a week ago it was reported that Werner Herzog's "next project" would be an adaptation of DBC Pierre's "Vernon God Little." It made us a bit worried that his Gertrude Bell biopic had been put on ice, but not only is it still moving, it has a new cast member and a start date on the horizon.

Now, this is how you not only get over a breakup, but continue to build a helluva resume. Say what you will about Robert Pattinson, but he is using his "Twilight" fame to take on challenging, interesting projects. Over the past few months, he's attached himself to "Mission: Blacklist" about the hunt for Saddam Hussein, a mystery movie about The Band, and "Animal Kingdom" director David Michod's "The Rover." But wow, we could not have seen this next move coming.
