Get To Know Your 2013 Apocalypse Movies
Hollywood likes to second-guess itself and look over its shoulder. “Oh, you’re producing a film about a math wizard who falls in love and takes a trip around the world in a balloon?” [Turns head, whispers in teeth to assistant] “Where’s our version of this? Get a draft on my desk by next Thursday.” This year we’ll see two White House movies (“White House Down” and “Olympus Has Fallen”) going toe-to-toe and a number of superhero film face-offs. But with apocalypse movies, it’s almost something else entirely. It seems to have captured the creative zeitgeist, and/or everyone is just creatively bankrupt. In Hollywood, it’s always hard to tell.

The studios have been busy, it seems, preparing for this first June weekend. The bevy of comedies, thrillers, adaptations, docs, and psycho killer little girl stories landing at the multiplexes and art houses are like a big neon sign that reads, "SUMMERTIME!" And really, what says summer better than a movie about interning? (We're talking to you, college students.) Maybe one about a 12-hour period of sanctioned lawlessness? (That's for all those who remember when summer was actually a vacation.) Whatever hearkens the season best, there is so much on the release slate today, you may need a to-do list to make it through the titles. And we'd love to know which films will make your top slots, so clue us in using the comments section below!

Well, it's ambitions were certainly up there. First announced two years ago, we kind of totally forgot about "Rapturepalooza," but Anna Kendrick and John Francis Daley had signed on for a comedy that was aiming to be something like "Zombieland" meets "The Big Lebowski." But judging by this new trailer for the movie, the filmmakers missed the mark...and then some...

We have to be honest, when we first heard of "Rapture-Paloooza," a title that is being developed as part of Lionsgate's new micro-budgeted genre film division, we didn't think much of it. But studios are now wetting themselves over the possible gains to be made with no-budget fare as they watch "Insidious" getting ready to clear about $90 million worldwide on a $1.5 million budget. And these movies are attracting better-than-usual talent who are likely hoping to make some decent back end coin if the film becomes a hit.
