If you ask Kevin Smith a question, you're going to get an answer, and when we sat down with the filmmaker last week he certainly wasn't at a loss for words. The director was speaking with press to promote his latest venture, the EPIX special "Jay and Silent Bob Go Down Under," a document of the Australian leg of his "Jay and Silent Bob Get Old" live show with his longtime collaborator Jason Mewes. It's another helping of what fans have come to love from Smith, as he relates his experiences with the humor and camaraderie of a fellow fan. And when he spoke with The Playlist, he was just as generous, and if you missed it yesterday, we ran the first part of our chat in which he shared his reasons why he prefers "The Avengers" to "The Dark Knight Rises," and why his hockey epic "Hit Somebody" is being scaled back to one movie instead of two. But there was even more.

Dear Kevin Smith, how’s it going, buddy? We’ve been following you on Twitter and couldn’t help but notice you had a rough go of it yesterday with those Indie Spirit Award nominations. No love for Michael Parks, John Goodman or Melissa Leo for "Red State"? That’s tough. Melissa’s probably okay with her Oscar, but we know what you mean—she was good in “Red State.”

We gotta admit, Kevin Smith stuck to his guns on this one. Throughout the "Red State" campaign, the director swore to stick to grassroots marketing and forgo the kind of big budget spend that traditionally accompanies a film's release. And while there have been a plethora of posters and other material for the project thus far, they've all been disseminated online. As for the film, after its raucous premiere at Sundance, Smith toured it around the country with pricey roadshow screenings that he hosted personally, with Q&A sessions after each. All that being said, he's arguably sold the movie to the exact people who knew about it already -- his fans. With the release now around the corner, it's time to engage everybody else. A full length, potty mouthed trailer has arrived.

Theatrical Release Still Planned For OctoberWatching Kevin Smith backpedal and rationalize is both amusing and exhausting and we have better things to do with our day, so here's the short version. Back in January, Smith made a big dog and pony show about how he was going to auction the rights to his indie horror film "Red State" right after the screening in Sundance, before surprising (and angering) everyone by selling the movie to himself for $20 in a big grand statement of rebelliousness. “We’re starting over,” Smith told the audience after his announcement. “It’s not just about making the movie, it’s about releasing the movie. True independence is not about handing your work over to some jackass.” Unless those jackasses happened to be named Lionsgate.

Say what you will about Kevin Smith's love/hate relationship with the press, but putting all that aside, "Red State" looks good and is a much needed new direction for the helmer.

Roadshow Starts March 5, Plus 'Red State' Reactions From The Twitosphere Down At Sundance, Reviews Definitely MixedWhat was purported to be an auction to sell off the U.S. distribution rights to Kevin Smith's new horror film, "Red State," tonight in Park City, Utah at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival turned out to be -- in the eyes of many -- a publicity stunt (the L.A. Times called it a media circus). And if Twitter was any indication, a publicity stunt that paid off well. While Smith, the "Red State," screening and its P.T. Barnum-like auction did not trend, it was the inescapable talk of the movie industry this evening dominating the conversation online.

We can't even keep up the man anymore. Anyway, with Sundance just a few weeks away, Kevin Smith has done what some would call a total reversal on his position of no press screenings for "Red State." But there's a catch. There are only 50 spots available for the screening that will take place in Kevin Smith's house. Any potential conflict of interest issues, you see? Perhaps that's in the eye of the beholder. You can hit up the director to request a spot via Twitter but we imagine they will go pretty quickly.
