SXSW Doc Review Recap: Snoop Lion In 'Reincarnated,' Alex Winter's 'Downloaded' & More

If the South by Southwest Film Festival was burdened by anything this year, it was an abundance of quality documentaries. It seemed that, while the narrative side of things was surprisingly sparse (where was the "21 Jump Street" or "The Raid" of this year?), the documentary selection was stronger than ever – there were more buzzed-about entries than we had time for, quite frankly (sorry "Medora!"), and almost everything we saw impressed us to one degree or another. Here is a quick rundown of a handful of key SXSW documentaries – "Lunarcy!," about people obsessed with the moon; "Downloaded," which aims to be the definitive documentary about file sharing program Napster; "Twenty Feet from Stardom," which charts the history of pop music from the backup singers' point of view; "Reincarnated," about Snoop Dogg's transformation into reggae titan Snoop Lion; and "I Am Divine," about director John Waters' corpulent muse, cross-dressing sensation Divine.

What Are You Seeing This Weekend? 'Burt Wonderstone' May Be 'The Call' For 'Spring Breakers' Everywhere

There's a certain sense of heightened and/or alternate reality pervading the theater releases this weekend. On the one hand, we have a film about magicians, professionals who create the illusion of having manipulated real world physics; plus, it takes place in Vegas, a city that, unto and of itself, is an entirely other universe. In the other corner is Harmony Korine's new picture, an exploitation flick where the Wizard of Oz leads the starlets of "High School Musical" in a coke-fueled game of Russian Roulette. And then, somewhere in the middle, "Little Miss Sunshine" gets kidnapped by a gasoline-hose-wielding sociopath.

We have to admit, when we first heard that rapper, actor, entrepreneur, film producer and weed ambassador Snoop Dogg had changed his name to Snoop Lion and was planning on releasing a reggae album, we thought it was just another wacky scheme by Calvin Broadus. But we have to admit to being somewhat compelled and a bit surprised by the trailer for "Reincarnated," the documentary about Snoop's journey to Jamaica and the making of his upcoming album of the same name.
