After an extended down period, the box office is back! Sorta! Kinda! Not really! We're not sure what this means! Regardless, after a weekend where no film registered a double-digit gross in the millions, there were two films from highly established brands battling for supremacy. In the end, the victory was had by "Resident Evil: Retribution," the fourth straight film from this franchise to open at the top spot. 'Retribution' also benefits from 3D like it's predecessor, "Resident Evil: Afterlife," though that film debuted to slightly under $27 million, and 'Retribution' is looking at a weekend tally of only $21 million.

Review: 'Resident Evil: Retribution' Is Apocalyptic Malevolence At Its Most Tedious & Banal

About once every eighteen months we’re cursed with another entry in the bafflingly endless, endlessly baffling “Resident Evil” franchise. Based on a series of popular horror survival games by Japanese company Capcom, the first film was originally supposed to be directed by zombie movie titan George Romero, who had directed a series of atmospheric commercials for the games in Japan. Instead, he was swapped out for Paul W.S. Anderson, who can charitably be described as a talentless hack, and had previously directed an adaptation of videogame “Mortal Kombat.” As such, gritty horror was replaced by a kind of cheaply lacquered Hollywood sheen.

In Theaters: 'The Master' Hopes To Not Have The Weekend 'Stolen' By 'Resident Evil' Or 'Liberal Arts'

It’s back-to-school season, in the real world and in Movieland, as art continues to imitate life. As you (or your kids, or a friend, or maybe just some random person on the corner) get back into the swing of the classroom, you can watch the big screen stars do the same thing! We do mean this literally, as two films this weekend are set within the hallowed walls of institutions of learning. But there are plenty of protagonists receiving informal educations (to Scientology… question mark?), learning new trades, and reintroducing themselves to the world as well. So go hit the books, then the theaters. Or vice versa: we won’t tattle.

Yeah, we know, these two movies go together like oil and water. One is an auteur-driven entry in a beloved franchise that has spanned generations, while the other is another indistinguishable addition to a series of films that has managed to beat out most people's expectations for its longevity. But they are both being released by Sony, so there's that.

After a few years that have seen studios deciding to focus on trying to make movies out of board games, it looks, from the last couple of days, as though video games are cycling back around as the hot source material. Monday saw Michael Fassbender announced as the star and producer of a film based on Ubisoft's hugely popular "Assassin's Creed" franchise, while yesterday a movie based on the long-running "Deus Ex" series was set up at CBS Films, Sony's "God Of War" film got new writers, and Dreamworks' "Need For Speed" got a firm 2014 release date.

The success of the “Resident Evil” franchise should come as a surprise to no one. When Paul W.S. Anderson’s first film arrived in 2002 it already had its winning formula in place, which essentially boils down to Milla Jovovich in a tight outfit brandishing weapons against a horde of mindless zombie/thingies/cannon fodder in slow motion. Over the series more CGI was used, with the quality somehow never increasing, and 3D was added. This September sees the release of the fifth film, “Resident Evil: Retribution,” and we have nine new images from the film.

With "The Dark Knight Rises" around the corner, lensing on his directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" underway and "Looper" and "Lincoln" due to be unveiled this fall, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is up for quite the year. And there's one lesser, JGL-starring vehicle that's certainly making the most of his presence: David Koepp's"Premium Rush," which now has a fresh new poster. The film looks, at best, like a fun little thriller, and sees the actor play a bike messenger who gets hold of a the wrong package with Michael Shannon on his tail. The film hits theaters on August 24th.

It would appear as if Milla Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale have created some sort of cinematic tag team of women in tight leather outfits battling supernatural forces at the megaplex. After Beckinsale knocks out her requisite “Underworld” film every couple years, Jovovich seems to follow suit and star in another installment of the “Resident Evil” series (and vice versa). It’s a wonder why their shared studio Screen Gems hasn’t thought to pair the two together for ass-kicking adventures, but for now we’ll have to settle for the upcoming “Resident Evil: Retribution,” which will see Jovovich return to the role of Alice for the fifth installment of the popular series.

Product placement in movies is nothing new, but has there ever been a teaser trailer so obviously constructed as a piece of advertising as the one for "Resident Evil: Retribution"?
