Gus Van Sant's 'Restless' Gets September 16th Release Date

Not long ago, there was a brief bit of drama surrounding Gus Van Sant's upcoming "Restless." As you might recall, the film was originally set to be released by Sony on January 25th. But the film was yanked from that slot and then transferred over to the arthouse arm, Sony Pictures Classics, who as it turns out are much better suited to handle the film. It's now a major part of next month's Cannes Film Festival where it will open the Un Certain Regard programming. And now, a new release date has been set for the film.

Year after year, some of the world's best directors hold off to debut their new films on the Croisette, and virtually every year brings at least one stone-cold classic -- along, of course, with the famous Cannes bombs. With last year's selection generally deemed to be the weakest in a while, has this year's batch (the 64th!) turned things around? Just one day to go until Thierry Fremaux reveals the full lineup of films set to unspool at this year's Cannes Film Festival and a couple more titles have been announced in advance of the fest. Joining "The Tree Of Life" and "Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" -- both of which are set to screen out of competition -- are two more titles, one arthouse fave and one blockbuster movie for everyone else.

Sony Pictures Classics To Release Gus Van Sant's 'Restless'; Fall Bow Being Eyed

Now this is more like it, frankly. When Sony Pictures had control of Gus Van Sant's romantic drama "Restless" under its purview, the film curiously was slotted in the throwaway January season (January 25 to be exact), which seemed fairly odd for a picture from a two-time Oscar nominee, considering his last film "Milk" earned eight Academy Award nominations in 2008.

Alright, continuing with our Most Anticipated Films of 2011 series which will roughly be in four parts (unfortunately, character/size limits prevent us from doing one massive feature). Here's part one which we published yesterday. If you're wondering where some of the tentpoles were yesterday -- "X-Men: First Class," "Cowboys And Aliens" and "Sherlock Holmes" -- well, they're here. If you were asking, whether indie-driven auteurs would be represented -- Lynne Ramsay's return with "We Need To Talk About Kevin," Mike Mills' "Beginners" or David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method" -- well, they're all here too.
