It’s almost Halloween, which means it’s time for terrible horror movies to rule at the box office. I’m surprised there aren’t more this year, but we do have the "Paranormal Activity" franchise taking the Halloween crown from “Saw,” which I think we’ve seen the last of for a good while, at least. Seven installments seems to be more than enough. Also this weekend, a festival of crazy wigs in “The Three Musketeers,” and we finally get to see that Other Olsen moppet at the local theater with “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”

For his debut feature film, the psychological virus thriller "Retreat," writer/director Carl Tibbetts gets a pretty solid dream team cast in Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton and Jamie Bell. And while the new U.K. trailer unveiled by Empire might look promising, unfortunately the story is more intent on throwing twists at the audience rather than settling down and actually developing its intriguing premise.

Writer/director Carl Tibbetts certainly didn't spare himself any narrative hurdles for his debut feature "Retreat." In fact, one could argue that it's nothing but narrative hurdles. The single setting film tosses together a psychological thriller, marital discord, sexual tension, an airborne virus and someone who may just be totally insane into a hearty stew that is unfortunately still somewhat flavorless. Curiously both overstuffed yet still empty, "Retreat" tries to be too many things at once and ultimately winds up having very little to show for the effort.

While the inevitable comparisons will be made to Steven Soderbergh's forthcoming "Contagion," first time feature filmmaker Carl Tibbetts seems to have taken a much different angle on the virus thriller than Soderbergh's globe-spanning flick.
