The Watch
On paper, "The Watch" sounds like a no brainer of potential awesomeness. Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade play mild-mannered suburban dudes who have to fight off an alien invasion—what could go wrong? Well, pretty much everything and simply put, it wasn't good. And last year's "This Is The End" (also featuring Jonah Hill) took that similar concept to much wilder, funnier places. And indeed, "The Watch" pretty much tanked at the box office, barely making back its budget. So what was it like making? Well, with his inventive and unique "The Double" in theaters, Ayoade has referred to being involved in "The Watch" rather... clinically.....

10 Films In Which Actors Play Multiple Roles
This week, in celebration of the release of Richard Ayoade’s “The Double,” a film we loved at TIFF (here’s Kevin’s A- grade review), what we really ought to be doing is a feature on films about doubles. Except, whoops, we just did one, for the release of the similarly themed, but very differently executed “Enemy” from Denis Villeneuve (which we also loved at TIFF, here’s Rodrigo’s A grade take). And so we’re honing in on a different, but related aspect of Ayoade’s film, namely that lead Jesse Eisenberg takes a dual role here, and so adds his name to the roster of actors who’ve played more than one character within a single film.

The Double
At just 23, Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has already proven her impressive range. In roles spanning “In Treatment,” “Jane Eyre,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and “The Kids are All Right,” audiences have come to appreciate her gentle and elegant thoughtfulness, mixed at times with a wisdom seemingly beyond her years.

The Double, Richard Ayoade
At the world premiere of “The Double,” British director Richard Ayoade’s second film, Toronto International Film Festival Artistic Director Cameron Bailey called Ayoade “one of the sharpest wits” in filmmaking, and the audience reacted with unbridled glee. New directors are rarely so well known, but Ayoade is also a comedic actor—most notably as “Moss” in the TV series “The IT Crowd”—who made his directorial debut three years ago at Toronto with the cult favorite (and critically admired) “Submarine,” a coming-of-age tale about an eccentric outsider.

This has been a crazy week for animation news – Henry Selick's seemingly doomed “The Shadow King” got resurrected; DreamWorks Animation’s financial troubles became very public (leading to schedule shifts and the cancellation of one film); and now here’s another bit of animation world news to get the blood going: Seattle-based stop motion studio Laika and Focus Features will reteam once again for “The Boxtrolls,” which has officially started production, for release on October 17th, 2014. This is the painstaking world of stop motion animation – get cracking boys!

It was just yesterday that we were wondering when 20th Century Fox was going to get the marketing ball rolling on "The Watch," the comedy starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade. The tragic killing of Trayvon Martin made selling a movie about a rogue neighborhood watch crew a bit difficult for the studio, but this healthy, lengthy international trailer for the movie shows they could have a comic hit on their hands.

Partly due to the Trayvon Martin case and also because their hands are already full with "Prometheus," which comes out a month before, Fox has been kind of quiet on "Neighborhood Watch." Until now. They've dropped a foul-mouthed and pretty fucking hilarious red band trailer for the movie that suddenly has put this one on our radar. And oh, by the way, it's now called "The Watch."

Nicholas Braun Also Joins Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill In Impressive Comic EnsembleMany directors start off as actors, and even once they've broken through behind the camera, can find it hard to shake the immediate rush you get from pretending in front of a camera. Look at Rob Reiner, who came up through TV sitcoms, put himself in first film "This is Spinal Tap," and still cameos from time to time in the likes of "30 Rock." Or Ron Howard, who for all the middlebrow dramas he's made, made a greater impact as the narrator of "Arrested Development" than with anything else in the last decade.

Considering we'd worried about his potential range earlier in his career, and the fact that he doesn't always seem that enamored of the idea of being a movie star in interviews, we continue to be impressed by the choices that Jesse Eisenberg has been making. Playing Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network" was always going to be a tricky role to escape from the shadow of, but he's already had a big animated hit since with "Rio," he's in theaters next week in the R-rated comedy "30 Minutes or Less," and he's got some impressive and diverse projects lined up, including Woody Allen's "Bop Decameron," the Louis Leterrier heist comedy "Now You See Me" with Melanie Laurent, Mark Ruffalo and Amanda Seyfried, and a possible reteam with 'Social Network' producer Scott Rudin on a biopic of youthful anti-terrorism expert Evan Kohlmann.

Arguably best known as the man responsible for the Channel 4 faux-'80s sci-fi parody "Garth Marenghi's Dark Place" and as the shouting nerd Moss in "The IT Crowd," you've likely seen British comedian Richard Ayoade's work behind the camera, yet been completely unaware. The Arctic Monkeys have recruited his talent for a triple-threat of songs ("Fluorescent Adolescent," "Crying Lightning," "Cornerstone"), not to mention they commissioned him to direct their live show "At The Apollo"; indie-pop staples Super Furry Animals put him to work for "Run Away" which starred BFF Matt Berry; and hipster approved group "Vampire Weekend" hired Ayoade to helm videos for debut album singles "Oxford Comma" and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa." So yeah, not exactly any obscure, Plan-It-X Records musicians on his CV.
