Sundance '11: 'Submarine' Director Richard Ayoade Responds To Wes Anderson Comparisons

Cites 'The Ice Storm,' 'Flirting' & 'Show Me Love' As InfluencesWe promised you’d be seeing a lot more about Richard Ayoade’s debut “Submarine” on the site. Over the weekend the poster for the film was released and while we’re still waiting on that trailer, the director has been busy at the Sundance Film Festival doing press for the film where it screens all week. The film, a coming-of-age tale of an awkward Welsh teenager trying to save his parents’ marriage while falling for his pyromaniac girlfriend, has been picking up pretty stellar reviews. Despite our excitement for the project, one of the things that has us a slight bit worried are the comparisons to Wes Anderson. We love Wes but generally only when he’s the one making the films. In an interview with Gordon and The Whale (full video below), Ayoade addresses some of these comparisons.

The Sundance Film Festival is now underway as industry veterans and cinephiles alike in Park City right now are shuffle from screening to screening looking for the next big thing. One of the films that made a splash there yesterday is the coming of age dark comedy “Submarine” which made its debut last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. At TIFF the film picked up some extremely positive reviews, comparing it to the work of Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach and Alexander Payne and The Weinstein Company quickly snatched the film up for distribution.

Co-Writing With Harmony Korine's Brother Avi We still haven't seen "Submarine," the feature debut from British comic-actor-turned-helmer Richard Ayoade, but all the signs are that he's the kind of director that we'll be taking to our hearts. The film, an adaptation of the coming-of-age novel by Joe Dunthorne, has a top-flight cast led by Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine, a score by the ludicrously talented Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, and earned almost unanimously good reviews coming out of Toronto.
