In typical early September fashion, critics are reeling from Venice and/or are in the throes of Toronto. If you think we're being over-dramatic, check out our main page and how many times you can spot "TIFF Review." With the cats out of the country, the mice aren't playing. The only newcomer in the top ten is the latest installment of a Vin Diesel-starring sci-fi trilogy, leading a pack of holdovers clinging for dear life.

10 Of The Most Unnecessary Sequels Ever
If popcorn cinema in 2013 has been defined by one thing, it's been "Sharknado." But if cinema in 2013 has been defined by two things, it's "Sharknado" and... a glut of unnecessary and unwanted sequels. Think about it: "A Good Day to Die Hard," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "RED 2," "Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters" "Despicable Me 2," "Kick-Ass 2," "Planes," "The Smurfs 2," "Grown Ups 2." These aren't just movies that are creatively unnecessary, they are movies that it's hard to imagine anyone wanting (though in the Sandler movie's case people bizarrely did actually show up, to humanity's shame). Even "Monsters University," arguably the year's best sequel/prequel/spin-off, wasn't one that seemed that creatively in demand—it was better than expected, but hardly essential. This week sees yet another sequel few were clamoring to hit theaters: "Riddick," the third movie in the series started by 2000's "Pitch Black" and continued with 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick.". And it got us thinking about other egregious examples through the years.

Review: 'Riddick' Starring Vin Diesel, Katee Sackhoff, And Karl Urban

Riddick
"Pitch Black," released by Universal in 2000 to little fanfare, was a small-scale genre movie that took almost everyone who saw it by surprise. It featured a nifty conceit (space travelers are marooned on a hostile alien world inhabited by nocturnal predators days before a lengthy solar eclipse) and an agreeably asshole-ish antihero in Riddick (Vin Diesel), a gruff prisoner who escapes in the crash. The problem, of course, was that Universal mistakenly took a cult phenomenon for the stuff of big budget crossover material, and when "The Chronicles of Riddick" opened in 2004, it was clogged with "world building" nonsense and ornate production design that was halfway between "Dune" and "Dungeons & Dragons."

Even before his name became tangled in the web of associations and secrecy that is Marvel's upcoming film slate, Vin Diesel was an absolute master of suggestion — just one “Fast & Furious” tidbit or Riddick-related image was enough to draw speculation to his impressive Facebook page. But then excitement really peaked when the actor revealed in June that Marvel had reached out to him; we thought the matter then settled when his voice/motion-capture role as talking tree Groot in “Guardians Of The Galaxy” was announced, but now it appears the original meeting had different intentions after all.

BROS! Gotta admit, this summer has been a bit of bummer. 'Fast 6' was like total sex, but that was like forever ago. My girl broke up with me, I've got that Mr. Sandusky for summer school English (that dude needs to get off my jock), so I've mostly been chillin' at my Moms. Nah, I didn't see any movies because, like, "Man Of Steel"? I ain't watchin' no Man In Tights. "Pacific Rim"? I'd prefer Pacific Trim, nah mean? But I got some fuckin' great news dudes -- VIN IS BACK.

Riddick
"Fast & Furious" is the franchise that keeps going from strength to strength, while "Riddick," Vin Diesel's other long-running series, is the one that just won't die. Diesel got his big break as the gravel-voiced, contact-lensed psychopath in David Twohy's "Pitch Black" in 2000, and after he became a star, Universal invested big in "The Chronicles of Riddick," and took a financial bath on a film that proved pretty incoherent and ugly (if occasionally intriguing).

Riddick
"Whatever happens no matter what they tell you. don't let 'em take these chains off me," thespian Vin Diesel intones dramatically. Yes, you guessed it, it's the new teaser trailer for "Riddick," the fourth film in the Riddick series after "Pitch Black," "The Chronicles of Riddick," the animated movie "The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury" and now, this latest picture. Frankly, it's ridic-ulous that the original films spawned a franchise, but clearly Vin Diesel has loyal fans and an audience is hungering for these sci-fi films to continue.

It's been about six years in the making -- or at least it seems like they've been talking about it that long -- but a pipedream comedy is not only finally happening, it now has a concrete release date.

Even for a man who's made a career of playing villains in the likes of "Bad Boys II," "Knight & Day" and "Columbiana," getting to play the bad guy in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek 2" would have been something of a prize. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà was said to be in the mix for the role, alongside "Carlos" star Edgar Ramirez, when Benicio Del Toro declined, but as we learned last week, he didn't land it, with British actor Benedict Cumberbatch taking the part instead. But Mollà clearly isn't too upset, as he'll be the main antagonist in another space franchsie instead.

Film To Be R-Rated, Shoot This Summer1999's "Pitch Black" was a nifty little sci-fi horror film: nothing special, but a solid genre entry, which used a decent cast, including Cole Hauser and Radha Mitchell, and in particular granite-voiced man mountain Vin Diesel, to good effect. The film made Diesel a star, and off the back of the success of "The Fast & The Furious," Universal took a gamble that the actor's breakout character in David Twohy's film, brutal convict Riddick, could be the star of his very own franchise, with 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick."
