Riddick
"Fast & Furious" is the franchise that keeps going from strength to strength, while "Riddick," Vin Diesel's other long-running series, is the one that just won't die. Diesel got his big break as the gravel-voiced, contact-lensed psychopath in David Twohy's "Pitch Black" in 2000, and after he became a star, Universal invested big in "The Chronicles of Riddick," and took a financial bath on a film that proved pretty incoherent and ugly (if occasionally intriguing).

Riddick
"Whatever happens no matter what they tell you. don't let 'em take these chains off me," thespian Vin Diesel intones dramatically. Yes, you guessed it, it's the new teaser trailer for "Riddick," the fourth film in the Riddick series after "Pitch Black," "The Chronicles of Riddick," the animated movie "The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury" and now, this latest picture. Frankly, it's ridic-ulous that the original films spawned a franchise, but clearly Vin Diesel has loyal fans and an audience is hungering for these sci-fi films to continue.

It's been about six years in the making -- or at least it seems like they've been talking about it that long -- but a pipedream comedy is not only finally happening, it now has a concrete release date.

Even for a man who's made a career of playing villains in the likes of "Bad Boys II," "Knight & Day" and "Columbiana," getting to play the bad guy in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek 2" would have been something of a prize. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà was said to be in the mix for the role, alongside "Carlos" star Edgar Ramirez, when Benicio Del Toro declined, but as we learned last week, he didn't land it, with British actor Benedict Cumberbatch taking the part instead. But Mollà clearly isn't too upset, as he'll be the main antagonist in another space franchsie instead.

Film To Be R-Rated, Shoot This Summer1999's "Pitch Black" was a nifty little sci-fi horror film: nothing special, but a solid genre entry, which used a decent cast, including Cole Hauser and Radha Mitchell, and in particular granite-voiced man mountain Vin Diesel, to good effect. The film made Diesel a star, and off the back of the success of "The Fast & The Furious," Universal took a gamble that the actor's breakout character in David Twohy's film, brutal convict Riddick, could be the star of his very own franchise, with 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick."
