Few film composers had a more amazing 2012 than Alexandre Desplat. The French composer, who rose to prominence based on his lush, nearly operatic score to Jonathan Glazer's woefully underrated supernatural melodrama "Birth," had an unparalleled 2012 which included scores to (deep breath) Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," Jacques Audiard's "Rust & Bone," Ben Affleck's "Argo," DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians," and Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty."

The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually a down time, but studios ordinarily have a big bopper out during this timeframe. But this opening frame for December was fairly quiet, giving "Skyfall" a chance to take the top spot one more time before this month's blockbusters hit theaters. The picture has been a monster, now becoming Sony's top grossing picture of all time, with $1 billion worldwide in its sights. The franchise may be 50 years old, but 007 has never been more popular.

While not as hotly contested as many of the major awards this holiday season, the International Animation Film Society announced the nominees for its 40th Annual Annie Awards yesterday, and offer, at the very least, a peak at what the Best Animated Feature Oscar race will look like in the next couple of months. Pixar's Scottish fairy tale "Brave," Disney's retro video game adventure "Wreck-It Ralph" and DreamWorks Animation's mythological team-up film "Rise of the Guardians" led the nominations with ten nominations a piece.

Nothing says Thanksgiving like turkey, football, and Michael Sheen’s wildly inappropriate laughter. Minor anomalies amidst the numbers suggest there is a chance we’re looking at the biggest 'Twilight' film thus far, as “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2“ dominated the marketplace once again to lead the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in box office history. Its pace remains slightly below series best 'New Moon,' but it looks like it should finish ahead of the other films in the franchise.

"Rise of the Guardians," the new DreamWorks Animation feature conceived by famed children's book author William Joyce, features, at its core, such an ingenious concept that it's hard to believe nobody's ever thought of it before. The plot concerns a kind of 'Avengers'-style super-team made up of beloved childhood characters – Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), the Sandman (he doesn't speak but communicates through ghostly dreams), and the newest, most reluctant member of the team, Jack Frost (Chris Pine), who must band together to stop the spooky boogeyman Pitch (Jude Law) from annihilating childhood innocence in a more profoundly evil way than the Internet already has.
