Warner Bros, DreamWorks, Disney & The Weinstein Company Pass On San Diego; Marvel On The FenceThe comic/geek crowd are either the most important group to court for genre films or their influence is overstated; it really depends on who you ask. In recent years, the very vocal contingent has generally been thought of as essential to making sure more challenging or niche fare finds an audience or least makes its budget back, but a series of disappointments and flops have the studios reconsidering. Last year, Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" was met with widespread geek acclaim only for the Universal film to sputter at the box office (though to be fair, the marketing for that film did little to embrace anybody outside the core of fans). "Sucker Punch" got major buzz and died on the vine this past spring, while "Tron: Legacy" played modestly despite nerds flipping for footage that Disney teased as early as 2008 (though yes, it has done enough to convince the studio get a sequel moving). And both "Skyline" and "Let Me In" faltered when they hit screens later in the year, after doing the San Diego Comic-Con rounds.

Like the Super Bowl, The MTV Movie Awards is less about who wins what than the spectacle of the event which brings music and movie stars together in one place and lets them party. It's also a marketing machine with many studios using the opportunity to pimp their summer movies and with "Super 8" and "Breaking Dawn" walking away with the most-talked-about trailers last night, these other clips from forthcoming releases were a bit overshadowed, so in case you missed them, here they are.

BRAAAAAAAAAHM! BRAAAAAAAAAHM! BRAAAAAAAAAHM! BRAAAAAAAAAHM! You hear that? Nope, it's not the trailer for "Inception," it's the copycat sound design used by every tentpole film now -- yeah, we're looking at you "Battle: Los Angeles" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" -- and that appears right in the midst of the latest spot for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

And that indecisive ape would be Caesar, as performance-captured by Andy Serkis, in this brand new shot from "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes." Caesar appears to be having a hard time deciding whether he wants his beverage to taste great, or to be less filling. He could just ask a human but - oh, crap, no he totally can't because that would just be another attempt for the human to undermine him and his kind. Less filling, you flesh-hogging two-legged miscreants!

Something's in the air. The days are getting longer. The weather's getting warmer. Your IQ is dropping by the day. That's right, it's the start of the summer movie season! The critical darlings that get you through the winter moments are a thing of the past, replaced by CGI-packed blockbusters, comedies and the occasional kids' flick, designed principally as a way of tempting you into an air conditioned theater to spend money on ice cream and nachos.

Another week, another batch of new posters being unveiled for Summer Blockbuster hopefuls. First up, we have a new theatrical banner for "Cars 2." The triptych image shows off the film's international setting and is full of stunning detail which you can get a better look at over at Apple. The film features Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy, ugh) heading overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. We're still not sold on the film itself but we're crossing our fingers that it could be fun. If anyone can pull it off, Pixar can.
