Stream This: Prince Avalanche, To The Wonder, Magic Magic,
Hey there fellow streamers. The 2013 summer blockbuster season is (mercifully) winding down, and the Oscar rollouts haven't yet begun, leaving us in the typically unpredictable middle ground of autumn. But with video on demand continuing to gain ground as a distribution platform, the streaming services don't seem to have noticed, and keep on delivering cinematic nuggets for us to consume. It's a fairly modern slate this weekend, with two simultaneous theatrical-VOD releases on the American indie side, and a Chilean movie skipping the cinema altogether. Then, we have two relatively recent picks: one from a divisive yet enduring filmmaker and another that focuses on a divisive and enduring issue in US politics. And as another seminal television program moves into its last season, we urge you to (re)watch the follow up episodes to gear up for what is sure to be a spectacular final push. So let's get right to it: the best of streaming for the week.

“Lovelace” has played at both Sundance and Berlin already this year, and it didn’t take The Weinstein Company long to snap up the distribution rights to the Amanda Seyfried-starring film (but we’re still waiting for a release date). That’s a pretty good outcome for directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, and you can fairly confidently predict that it will easily outgross their previous feature, the James Franco starring “Howl,” when it eventually makes its way into theaters. But even before it does, the pair have lined up their next project, and it’s “The Girl Who Conned the Ivy League.”

Berlin Review: Biopic 'Lovelace' Oddly Uninterested In Linda Lovelace

Not so much a film about Linda Lovelace as a film about a bunch of things that happen to Linda Lovelace, including a destructive marriage to seeming complete, total, bonafide scumbag sonofabitch Chuck Traynor, today saw the first international screening of Sundance pick-up “Lovelace” at the Berlin Film Festival. It’s a glossy, starry package featuring loving '70s set design, costuming and narratively crucial hairstyling (more on that later), but the main question was always around the casting of the leading lady, especially given that the last few years have seen a flurry of names come and go from both this and rival Lovelace project “Inferno” (which famously once boasted Seyfried’s “Mean Girls” co-star Lindsay Lohan).

James Franco, who we've come to know and love as an actor who defies expectations, is eying a role as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner (after being initially offered the lead of Chuck Traynor) in "Lovelace," Variety reports.

It seems that a film about notorious "Deep Throat" porn star Linda Lovelace is something quite a few people in Hollywood want to get made. There are two currently competing projects: the first is Matthew Wilder's "Inferno" that was famously going to have Lindsay Lohan in the lead role, but now is toplined by Malin Akerman and Matt Dillon. Last we heard, filming was supposed to begin this month though it appears that hasn't really happened and word on the project has grown quiet once again. The other is by “Howl” and "The Celluloid Closet" directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman that at one point was courting Kate Hudson and James Franco, and while we haven't heard a peep out of that project since the beginning of the year, it's now earning some fresh buzz.

Yes, its yet another project linked to James Franco who seems to be spending his time between classes, just calling up producers in Hollywood and chatting with them about projects that pique his curiosity.
