New Footage Confirms That Rachel McAdams Returns For SequelThe Christmas season coming up contains more than a few risks in terms of the big commercial movies. Films like "The Muppets" and "The Adventures of Tintin" are placing large, expensive bets on properties that are no longer as famous as they once were, Sony are hoping that audiences will want to spend the holidays with an R-rated tale of rape and murder with "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," and Martin Scorsese has a hugely expensive family movie that, if early reviews are to be believed, appeals mainly to cinephiles.

Robert Downey Jr. Says Some Elements Of 'Iron Man 2' Were "Dissatisfying And Disappointing"

There is no doubt that Robert Downey Jr.'s career is marked by two phases: before "Iron Man," and everything else after. Landing the lead role in the Marvel film was the validation of the actor's comeback and forgiveness from Hollywood. He had put his bad-boy ways behind him and proved to everyone he still had the goods in a string of films including "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "Zodiac" and "A Scanner Darkly" before Jon Favreau came calling, wanting to place him in a metal suit to fight bad guys. The result of the marriage? Over $585 million in ticket sales worldwide, the birth of a new franchise and RDJ's ascension to the A-list (you can bet the success of "Iron Man" led Warner Bros. to confidently cast him as "Sherlock Holmes"). Now set to receive the 25th American Cinematheque Award, and looking back on his films with the LA Times, RDJ admits what everyone else already knows: "Iron Man 2" didn't live up to its predecessor.

'Mr. Ed' Also Headed To The Multiplex, Of CourseSome actors use their newfound fame and clout to try and get more adventurous, ambitious stories movies made. And then there's Robert Downey Jr. If you had said in the late 1990s that the actor would become the star of two major tentpoles and one of the biggest actors in the world, you would have been laughed at. But the actor has not only rebounded, but been given the kind of second chance that pretty much never happens and he's not gonna screw it up with some indie flick. He's already done enough of those those. While he's got the "Sherlock Holmes" and "Iron Man" movies bringing home the bacon, he's now got another franchise ready vehicle lined up to keep the green stuff rolling in.

D23 Event Is An All Too Brief & Nearly Pointless TeaserAfter Marvel’s much-discussed no-show at last month’s Comic-Con, the hype machine has been turning fast leading up to this weekend’s Disney D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center. They’ll be pulling out all the stops, right? “Avengers” footage, revealing those two newly-dated mystery projects, surprise appearances and who knows what else. Well, some of that wound up being true, but Marvel’s showing at D23 wasn’t nearly as exciting as the speculation leading up to it.

"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte... just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail fin. What we didn't know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named 'The Battle of Waterloo' and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark will go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark...he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living...until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they...rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist."

We'll be the first to admit we pegged "Sherlock Holmes" all wrong. While it looked rather disastrous in its marketing, what with those 7/11 taquitos tie-ins and what not, it seemed like some kind of Disney-fied disaster gone wrong; a tepid version of "Pirates Of The Caribbean 2" set in the world of the famous English detective. But cut to December 2009 and Guy Ritchie's dazzling direction, Hans Zimmer's killer score and Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law's unexpected chemistry proved us totally wrong. We were happy to eat crow and this was exactly what we're hoping from a tentpole: something thrilling, engaging and, okay, maybe smart would be too much, but the film didn't insult our intelligence and these days that's a plus; "Sherlock Holmes" was a total winner.

The Licensing International Expo, where movie studios court promotional partners to produce toys, Happy Meals and other unnecessary accessories to wring every cent out of potential franchises, is currently underway in Las Vegas, and a selection of early posters for big properties are starting to leak out. Most aren't really newsworthy (if you've ever wondered what a promotional one-sheet for "Men in Black 3" would look like, it involves the letters M, I and B, followed by the number 3, on a black background), but there's one exception.

You may or may not have heard, but this weekend in Los Angeles, the L.A. Times geek blog, Hero Complex held its own little festival. Jon Favreau and HC webmaster Geoff Boucher were scheduled to talk about Favreau's career-making turn as the director behind 2008's wildly successful, "Iron Man" on Sunday night at the Chinese 6 Theatre in Hollywood and a little unannounced guest appeared: none other than Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr.

It's hasn't been all that long since Jon Favreau confirmed that he wouldn't be returning to the franchise that made his name: after reportedly feuding with Marvel on "Iron Man 2," the former-Pete-from-"Friends" opted to helm the Disney blockbuster-in-waiting "Magic Kingdom" over the third installment of the metal-suited comic book hero. But in an unusually streamlined procedure, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" writer/director Shane Black was officially hired in a directing capacity a few weeks back (Oscar-winner Tom Hooper was also offered the director's chair earlier).

Paul Thomas Anderson is nothing if not deliberate. With Kubrickian spans of time between each of his films, the man simply will not be rushed. Which is why it was surprising that a few short months after his religious drama (commonly referred to as) “The Master” seemed to go quiet, it was revealed late last year that Anderson was already hard at work on his next project, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s "Inherent Vice." At that time, CAA, (who also rep Anderson), wanted to attach Robert Downey Jr. to the lead role of private eye Doc Sportello, but because of Downey’s busy schedule it was unclear when he would be available to film. Just over a week ago it was reported that billionairess Megan Ellison was looking to finance both projects for Anderson and many wondered which would shoot first? With Downey having recently dropped out of Sam Raimi’s “Oz The Great And Powerful” it looked very likely that he might have a ‘Vice’ sized hole in his schedule later this year.
