RDJ Not Signed On Yet, And Project Sounds Like It's In Early Stages, But WowAdapting the work of reclusive literary genius Thomas Pynchon seems like a fool's errand. His novels -- "Gravity's Rainbow" and "The Crying of Lot 49" -- among others, feature dense plotting, allegorical whimsy, and are stuffed so full of characters that any screenwriter stupid enough to attempt an adaptation must be suicidal. Unless that book is his latest "Inherent Vice" and unless the person adapting it is Paul Thomas Anderson.

Ugh. The writing has been on the wall for a while now -- Deadline first hinted at it late last month -- but now it's official: Robert Downey Jr. has left Alfonso Cuarón's forever gestating "Gravity." It appears that scheduling, long cited to be the issue, just couldn't be worked out and the actor has had to move on. Admittedly, the part was a small one -- he would've featured only in the first act -- but it was seemingly a tailor made role, that of a motor mouthed astronaut alongside the female lead who has to urgently navigate a ship back home.

At some point between its initial release last summer and today, Todd Phillips' "The Hangover" has gone from being an alright, somewhat amateurish guys-night-out comic fantasy to, like, the funniest movie ever (it also, staggeringly, became the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time). The fact that we can't place a single noteworthy scene or memorable line, a little more than a year later, says something, especially because other things about the film still linger unhappily such as its somewhat slack pacing and icky misogynistic overtones.

Last we heard, Sandra Bullock had signed on to join Alfonso Cuaron's ailing sci-fi thriller "Gravity," but now doubts are being raised about whether or not long-attached co-star Robert Downey Jr., will stay on board the film.
