At 76 years old, Robert Redford could take the easy way out, working with the established veterans he could easily reach with a phone call, and doing safe material that would be a lay up with critics and audiences. But that's just not how Redford rolls. Booking a part in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and with a reportedly dialogue-free role in "Margin Call" director J.C. Chandor's upcoming "All Is Lost," Redford is finding some fun with younger filmmakers in the kinds of movies he's not really known for. And now he's teaming up with a director who made some serious waves at Sundance in January.

It seems both Richard Linklater and Robert Redford are having a moment. The former will be spending a good part of 2013 doing laps for "Before Midnight," his much anticipated sequel to "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset." Meanwhile, Redford has his latest directorial effort "The Company You Keep" hitting theaters this weekend, a surprising role in the blockbuster "Captain America: The First Avenger," an intriguing near silent turn in the upcoming disaster pic of sorts "All Is Lost" and a must-read Esquire profile too. So perhaps it makes sense that these two old Sundance pals should decide to work together.

The Sundance Film Festival is now underway, which means the next week or so is going to be a blitzkrieg of announcements, buzz, hype and more from the films showing their stuff up in Park City. But the first juicy nugget of news doesn't come from any of the movies, but from the festival's founder Robert Redford, and it's about one of his forthcoming pictures from a Sundance alum.

TIFF Review: Robert Redford's 'The Company You Keep' Is An Unconvincing Bit Of Agitprop

The third film in Robert Redford’s recent series of stillborn, bleeding heart dramas, "The Company You Keep" is a busy but inert civic-minded thriller. As a director, Redford has yet to break his recent habit of using hackneyed dialogue to talk down to his audience with Aaron Sorkin-esque dialogue that authoritatively spells out his talking points. But unlike "Lions for Lambs," an impressively incensed civics lesson that thinks it’s a drama, "The Company You Keep" is too cool of a film to be admired for its creator’s chutzpah alone. In fact, it’s probably the most frustrating of Redford’s recent films because it has a pseudo-contemplative atmosphere to it, one that superficially begs viewers to reflect upon how far they would go for their convictions. Political apathy is the real enemy in "The Company You Keep," making it pitiably ironic that Redford’s latest is as unmoving as it is.

Images from that big Toronto announcement this morning keep coming, and two adult-minded thrillers from stars-turned-directors are next up. We had the first look at Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep" yesterday, with images of Redford (who plays the lead role, a '60s radical on the run), Shia LaBeouf (the journalist pursuing him) and Brit Marling (Redford's daughter). Now a new picture of Redford, this time being pursued at night, has arrived on the TIFF website along with the first look of Susan Sarandon in the film. The film is getting a gala premiere but not a world premiere, suggesting heavily that it's likely to be bowing at Venice, as rumored, a week or two beforehand -- that news should be confirmed on Thursday.

It's hard to belive that despite all the illustrious leading men Diane Keaton has starred with in the course of her career -- Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Woody Allen, Robert De Niro, Warren Beatty -- she somehow never crossed paths with Robert Redford. And while it's kind of exciting they are finally pairing up, it's too bad that it will be in service of such an uninspired project.

The story of J.C. Chandor in 2011 can be described in two words: slow burn. He hit Sundance in January to unspool his financial crisis drama "Margin Call" where it received very good, but not quite ecstatic reviews. But something curious happened. This fall, that very good word out of Park City started to turn into serious awards season buzz, and while the major awards have eluded him, Chandor and his film earned a handful of nods from various guilds, with "Margin Call" striking a chord in more than one critic. Well, he's caught the eye of the Sundance Kid himself and together they're going to embark on an adventure.

Say what you like about Robert Redford's directorial efforts (like, for instance, that "Quiz Show" aside, they very closely replicate the experience of watching paint dry. Underwater), but he knows how to stack a film with a cast of ringers. Even a film as dull as his recent "The Conspirator" was able to attract names like James McAvoy, Robin Wright, Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson and many more, mainly drawn by the opportunity to work with one of the all-time great movie stars.
