Universal wants to be in the Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci business, and why wouldn't they? The writing pair are one of the hottest hires around town, having lent their pens to two "Transformers" movies, "Star Trek" and its upcoming sequel, and they were just hired by Sony to rewrite "The Amazing Spider-man 2." Unfortunately, the only project they did for Universal was the bomb "Cowboys & Aliens" but the studio is banking that their track record will score them another winner.

Well this is something of a surprise – “Fringe,” the much-beloved but dismally rated sci-fi series created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, is getting a reprieve. Fox has announced that they’ve made a deal to bring back the series for a fifth (and final) 13-episode stretch, mostly, it seems, because it’s a DVR powerhouse and Abrams is someone who the network likes to keep happy (although its unclear whether or not his uneven “Alcatraz” will be back next season).

It's not as if the script for "The Amazing Spider-Man" is lacking in the blockbuster quotient behind it. While "Zodiac" scribe James Vanderbilt brings a slight air of prestige in the credits, the screenplay for the upcoming reboot is also credited to Steven "Harry Potter" Kloves and Alvin "Spiderman 2 and 3" Sargent. But it seems Sony wants a bigger boom for the planned sequel, and have hired two the biggest guns around town.

Audiences can’t seem to get enough of their tawdry vampire love sagas nowadays, and while more than enough has been said about “The Twilight Saga,” there’s also “True Blood,” "Vampire Diaries," the “Underworld” movies, and about a dozen upcoming projects chronicling these creatures of the night. Though long before Stephenie Meyers or Alan Ball sunk their teeth into vampire lore, author Anne Rice pretty much had the monopoly on all things fanged in popular culture throughout the late-‘80s and ‘90s.

Casting is always a difficult proposition, but doubly so when it comes to finding an actor or actress on the younger end of the scale; picking a fledgling young star who doesn't come across as being too precious, while still being able to sell potentially difficult material. And it's triply difficult when you're working from well-established material, with all the preconceived notions that might be in place for an audience. These are the difficulties that director Gavin Hood has been faced with for his new film, "Ender's Game."

'Lost' Scribe Reportedly Receiving Seven-Figure DealDamon Lindelof has become quite the Hollywood favorite after writing and exec producing "Lost" through to its controversial finish last year. He helped write the upcoming "Cowboys and Aliens" for Jon Favreau and gave a much-needed boost to Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel, so much so that Scott deemed the story worthy of a completely new figuration called "Prometheus."

Gavin Hood's developing sci-fi pic "Ender's Game" just got a major boost. At the end of last week, Roberto Orci -- one half of the hugely successful writing/producing duo with Alex Kurtzman - hit Twitter to reveal: "Ender's Game! Us(K/O), Oddlot, and Gavin Hood taking his amazing script to the town! Who wants some?"

Story's Been Broken, Film Not Seen As 'A Second Act' To this day, we're still kind of stunned as to how much we enjoyed last summer's reboot of "Star Trek." Sure, it had its fair share of plot holes and silly moments (not that we want to kick this one off again -- our post on our issues with the film still holds the record for most comments over at the old site), but its energy and sheer enthusiasm made it easily the best tentpole of last year, thanks to pitch-perfect casting, and outstanding direction from J.J. Abrams.
