25 Breakthrough Artists of 2013
One of the great pleasures of being a movie fan is the discovery of new performers. Faces that, months earlier, you'd have passed by in the street, suddenly gifted the role of a lifetime, and whose lives will never be the same again. It feels to us that 2013 was an especially strong year for new faces: festivals like Sundance, SXSW and Cannes, not to mention films that went straight to wide release, unleashed a veritable hurricane of talent that we'll be seeing for years to come.

12 Years A Slave
... and here we go. Even though we're not even in November, and with two more months of movies and awards season contenders to come, the Gotham Independent Film Awards have announced their nominees for 2013. While this may be "the first major awards ceremony of the film season," the real accomplishment here is shining a light on the kind of well-made, acclaimed movies that will unfortunately be forgotten as the heavier hitters with more money behind them elbow their way to the Dolby Theater in February.

Review: Lesbian Drama 'Concussion' Starring Robin Weigert

Robin Weigert is an actress of intriguing, indistinct beauty. She could be your teacher, your mother, your librarian or your sister-in-law. It likely makes her the best fit for “Concussion,” an intriguing, vaguely European indie drama. Her Abby is a wife and a mother, as well as an upstanding member of a suburban community. All these things are believable. Somehow, as a prostitute, smiling wanly as she caresses and cuddles her clients, she makes that much more sense. Anyone who saw Weigert steal absolutely every scene as the wily Calamity Jane in HBO’s flawless “Deadwood” understands this dichotomy well: there are few things sexier than wearing various faces.

Robin Weigert gives one of the most intimate and brave performances of the year in “Concussion,” a drama about a bored housewife who turns to escorting to spice up her life. But the feature debut by Stacie Passon flips the “Belle de Jour” script, as Weigert’s character Abby is in a same sex marriage with responsible lawyer Kate. The two women live in suburban contentment with their two kids, dream house, and spin classes, until one day Abby gets a “wake up call” in the form of a softball to the head. This injury awakens a long-dormant sexual desire in her, and with the help of her young contractor, begins to see female clients in her New York City loft.
