Cannes Review: Ari Folman's Part-Animated 'The Congress' Is Overstuffed And Overwritten, But Sort Of Fascinating

Ari Folman's "The Congress" aka "Robin Wright at The Congress" aka "Reviewer's Nightmare" (last title mine) opens the director's fortnight at Cannes this evening and screened for a group of alternately beguiled and baffled press this morning. Evoking Miyazaki and perhaps on-form Gilliam in its best moments, and lurching oddly into "Southland Tales" territory in its worst, it is a film we'd be happy to call a fascinating muddle, were it not a little overstretched to really support even that summation. At the very least, however, should your copy of "Pink Floyd's The Wall" have worn out through overuse, we can see "The Congress" having a similar kind of life as a late-night stoner mindfuck.

'Animal Kingdom' Star James Frecheville & Xavier Samuel From 'Twilight: Eclipse' Also On Board After a long career as an actress and director, French helmer Anne Fontaine had something of an international breakout with her last film, "Coco Before Chanel." The film, a biopic of the legendary fashion designer starring Audrey Tautou, proved to be critically acclaimed, garnering six Cesar nominations, four BAFTA nods and a place on the shortlist for Best Costume Design at the Oscars, and is one of the most successful French pictures of recent years, taking an impressive $43 million worldwide. As such, Fontaine is a hot property, and news has emerged that she's set to make her English-language debut with a pretty impressive cast.

First Look: Woody Harrelson Proves NWA Had A Point In New Clips From 'Rampart'

Tonight is the world premiere of "Rampart," currently showing without a distributor at the Toronto International Film Festival. Anticipation is high for Oren Moverman's highly-anticipated follow-up to the excellent "The Messenger," and while Woody Harrelson nabbed a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for that role, three new clips courtesy of THR showcase Harrelson as the lead in what we figured was an intriguing ensemble piece. The film is a period piece that showcases the repercussions of the L.A. Riots on an embattled former Vietnam vet struggling with the responsibilities of the badge, and trying to balance his sanity and questionable on-the-job morals. Moverman's co-writer on the project, which is based on a true story, was none other than legendary crime novelist James Ellroy.

Robin Wright In Negotiations To Join Kevin Spacey In David Fincher's Netflix Series 'House of Cards'

We have to admit, we're enormously intrigued by "House of Cards." A remake of the popular BBC series from the 1990s, itself based on a series of books by political insider Michael Dobbs, it marks the reunion of David Fincher, one of the biggest directors around, and Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey, for the first time since "Se7en," and on a TV series, no less. More importantly, it has the potential to be a real game-changer, being the first original series commissioned by streaming giants Netflix, who will air the show exclusively, having committed $100 million to the show, and scheduling it for an unprecedented 26-episode, two season run straight off the bat.

Ari Folman's "The Congress," his animated, sci-fi followup to "Waltz With Bashir," has been in development for a while now, with early footage unveiled last year at the Cartoon Movie symposium in Lyons, France, and we're glad to see it's still alive, moving forward and set to start shooting.
