While it's six years since we had a new feature film from Paul Verhoeven, the great Dutch director is still wielding his influence over Hollywood, even if only as a source of material. This past summer, Verhoeven's 1990 actioner "Total Recall" received the big-budget remake treatment, just as a redo of his 1987 breakthrough "Robocop" went into production, helmed by Jose Padilha, while at the same time, it was announced that his 1997 "Starship Troopers" was being eyed for another version by the producers of 2012's "Total Recall," one more "patriotic" and less "violent" than the original.

One of the big breakout performers of 2012 is looking likely to be the first major Belgian movie star since Audrey Hepburn (yep, she was born in Belgium) -- Matthias Schoenaerts. The 34-year-old has been acting for nearly two decades, but finally exploded in 2012 thanks to acclaimed back-to-back performances in the Oscar-nominated "Bullhead" and opposite Marion Cotillard in Jacques Audiard's celebrated Cannes drama "Rust & Bone."

We have to admit, we were beginning to wonder what was going on with Neill Blomkamp's expensive, mysterious "Elysium." With a release dating looming about five months from now and no posters, teaser trailers, stills or any other kind of marketing, we figured either that a) Sony was going to start a blitzkrieg campaign once they were done with "Skyfall" or b) it was getting pushed back. Now we have our answer.

Just a few days ago, Fernando Meirelles, director of "City of God," was quoted as saying that his friend Jose Padilha, currently hard at work on his Hollywood debut, a remake of "RoboCop," was having a terrible time on the film. "For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut," Meirelles told a South American website. But wait! A Brazilian newspaper interviewed Padilha and it seems that he's actually totally fine, so just chill.

With filming on "RoboCop" getting rolling soon, director Joseph Padilha describing the production as "hell" and proposed villain Hugh Laurie bailing, we wondered who the filmmakers could find on such short notice to fill a key role. Though some aren't quite enamored with this film already, “Elite Squad” helmer José Padilha has assembled quite a cast for his remake of Paul Verhoeven’s cult classic, “RoboCop.” And he keeps adding to it as Marianne Jean-Baptiste has joined the cast as the Detroit Police Chief, Karen Dean.
