We haven't paid attention to the Grammys in years, mostly because it's irrelevant, these days we're barely familiar with half the nominees, and the show is usually pure tedium. (Don't even get us started on that Beach Boys tribute thing last year.) But for movie buffs looking to maintain their awards season high, yesterday's announcement of Grammy nominees did bring with it some films that are looking to collect gold from their pals in the music biz.

Kids sure do love these CGI ‘toons. “Madagascar 3D: Europe’s Most Wanted” took over the box office for a second straight week, handily defeating holdovers and two new big releases despite falling off a bit heavier than your usual kids’ flick (41.1%). Having grossed $120 million domestically so far, the film is certainly playing up to expectations, currently performing in the vicinity of the previous installment. And it had better -- next week, the Pixar beast looms, with “Brave” taking both the family audience and a number of those 3D screens.

Hey there! The world of the creative takes center stage on the big screen this week, as singers, writers, and performance artists feature heavily in the weekend releases. From ‘80s rock bands to the New York art scene to ex-pat writers in the birthplace of literary circles, The City of Lights itself, a hefty dose of the artistic graces the cinemas and adds some interesting and nontraditional subject matter to the lineup. Though the obligatory summer fare – another adult male with Peter Pan syndrome, a grisly murder flick, and even more aliens – isn’t very far behind. Looks like a blast!

After a few of years since the last major effort (the ill-fated "Nine"), the live-action movie musical is back again, with two starry efforts due this year about as far away from each other as you can get. This Christmas will see the terribly-serious looking "Les Miserables" hit theaters, with a star-studded cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. But first is "Rock Of Ages," which arrives in theaters tomorrow, with another A-list ensemble including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Review: 'Rock of Ages' Is Anything But a Good Time

"Rock of Ages" will make you want to raise your arms...and then immediately plunge your fingers into your eyeballs for salvation (you can go back for seconds to rescue your ears). "Hairspray" helmer Adam Shankman directs this movie that will finally kill the '80s nostalgia that continues to plague us if we're lucky and will further root karaoke performances and bar jukeboxes in that hairspray-choked decade if we're not. We've had a sub-par version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" stuck in our head since we saw it, and we wouldn't wish this fate on anyone, except perhaps the development heads at Warner Bros. As much as everyone keeps trying to make Julianne Hough a star, Steve Perry she is not (though admittedly she is cuter).

If you still have Def Leppard’s Pyromania album on heavy rotation and prefer Jefferson Starship to Jefferson Airplane, then there’s a pretty good chance you’re excited for the upcoming musical adaptation, “Rock Of Ages.” An ode to the days of hair metal and tight leather pants, “Hairspray” helmer Adam Shankman has cooked up a tale of a small town girl (livin’ in a lonely world) and a city boy who fall for one another on the Sunset Strip, all while in pursuit of their Hollywood dreams. Some of us here at The Playlist have secretly been anticipating the film’s June release, and with a cast consisting of Russell Brand, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J.
