White House Down, Roland Emmerich
This week, "White House Down," the deliriously silly (but ridiculously entertaining) White House hijacking movie, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, detonates onto Blu-ray and DVD. In honor of the film's release, we chatted with "White House Down" filmmaker Roland Emmerich and asked him to run down the five biggest influences on the film (which this writer places amongst the top tier of the director's work). At first he was reluctant ("I feel back in school, like I had to do homework"), but eventually he shared what fuelled his movie. Read on to find out what inspired "White House Down," the dirty wife beater Channing wears and Jamie Foxx's famous line about his sneakers.

EXCLUSIVE: While talking with director Roland Emmerich earlier today, as he does press for the forthcoming home video release of "White House Down," we had to inquire about the state of his highly anticipated "Independence Day 2." He sighed when we asked about the film, and claimed that it was, "A daily battle ... The budget, the schedules, the actors … " Still, he promised, "It's looking good." The director was more elusive, however, when we pressed him about the potential involvement of Will Smith, something that seems to fluctuate wildly every time someone asks him about it.

"Stargate" (1994)
When it comes to the films of Roland Emmerich, the German director who has immigrated to Hollywood to become the premiere purveyor of large-scale destruction, it doesn't get much better than 1994's "Stargate." A movie that combined ancient aliens theorizing with old-fashioned adventure, the film (that starred James Spader and Kurt Russell) spawned a series of successful television spin-offs and endless talk of a sequel. While the director confirmed that Will Smith might be in talks for "Independence Day 2," he also let slip during the same interview that a "Stargate" reboot/sequel thingee is also in the cards.

Jada & Willow To Also Feature? It was in spring 2010 that word first cropped up about possible back-to-back sequels to the blockbuster "Independence Day," with shooting said to take place as early as this year. Well, that didn't happen, and megastar Will Smith went on to make another franchise sequel instead in the shape of "Men In Black 3," but once again, the sequels are rearing their heads. Director Roland Emmerich, who has long been saying that once a story is in place they'll move forward, teased during an interview with The Lantern earlier this week when he said, "I'd say hold tight. It's happening soon." And it looks like it is.

Believe it or not, advance word on Roland Emmerich's Shakespeare conspiracy movie "Anonymous" is actually good. We shit you not. And while the movie is a bit of a departure for the usually disaster-happy director, lately he's surrounding himself with projects that are more in line with his established oeuvre. Up next he's got the epic and somewhat secretive "Singularity," which already has a May 17, 2013 release date. And oh yeah, he was also offered "Asteroids" this summer (though it doesn't seem like he's taken it). But alas, on the backburner for a couple of years now has been an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's classic "Foundation" series.

Will Hit Theaters On May 17, 2013Roland Emmerich and Shakespeare? That's the question that nearly brought a nation to its knees when it was announced that Emmerich was temporarily putting his pyro gear aside (sort of) and focusing on the conspiracy theory that the Bard didn't really write all those plays. Shocking stuff, we know. And while the trailer for "Anonymous" still showed he can't go through a full movie without at least a few 'splosions, it looks like he wants to go back to delivering them wholesale.

Roland Emmerich who has combined his knack for big explosions and doomsday scenarios into a film career, is going to take a stab at something resembling respectability when he delivers the Shakespeare conspiracy theory movie "Anonymous" later this year, but we knew he couldn't stay away from the CGI for too long.
