Are you ready to tumble down into the mind of Charles Swan? Self-obsessed, selfish, a bit of trainwreck...undoubtedly there will be many making the Sheen/Swan connection, but if anything, the first trailer for "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" firmly establishes that this is very much a Roman Coppola movie.

At the Rome Film Festival earlier this month, Roman Coppola premiered his second directorial film “A Glimpse Into the Mind of Charles Swan III” starring Charlie Sheen. Coppola’s debut, “CQ” was eleven long years ago, but it’s not like he hasn’t been busy in the intervening years, producing sister Sofia’s “Somewhere,” co-writing “Moonrise Kingdom” and "The Darjeeling Limited" with regular collaborator Wes Anderson and even directing second unit for his father, of whom you may have heard. All this alongside a thriving career in commercials and music videos as well. We had the chance to sit down with Coppola in Rome and quiz him about how he strikes this unusual balance, his new film and his future plans, among other things. Here are seven things the ensuing conversation taught us.

Roman Coppola's "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III," his long-awaited sophomore directorial effort (arriving more than a decade after "CQ"), finally premiered this month at the Rome Film Festival. And luckily, you won't have to wait too long to see it yourself.

Roman Coppola may only be on his second directorial feature, but as a music video and commercials director, and as a writer and frequent Wes Anderson collaborator, not to mention handling the second unit on various films from his famous family members, he has certainly amassed a wealth of filmic experience. All of which he brings to bear on "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III," which premieres tonight at the Rome Film Festival. Destined to be a crowd-pleaser, for its many celebrity cameos, quirky and apropos Liam Hayes music, and lovingly detailed 70s-influenced stylization, the films affords many glossy, knowing pleasures, and we found ourselves really wanting to love it. But that deeper level of engagement just didn't kick in for us, for two main reasons: the lack of a strong narrative through line and the lack of dimensionality to the central titular character. The film delivers on its title, but it turns out we need more than just a glimpse.

Renaissance man Roman Coppola hasn't directed a feature-length movie since the highly underrated "CQ" in 2001, so it's with eager anticipation we look forward to his latest, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III." The director may not have helmed a feature in eleven years, but he's been busy, producing his sister Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," co-writing Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Darjeeling Limited," and shooting second-unit photography for both these filmmakers and his father Francis Ford Coppola (not to mention shooting tons of great music videos in the interim too).

With the fall film festival line-ups now pretty much all revealed, it seems we may have to wait until 2013 to see the sophomore directorial effort of Roman Coppola. It's been over ten years since the deliciously twisted "CQ," but Coppola has now brought together a great cast that includes Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for what he describes as "a guy's point of a view of a break-up" in "A Glimpse Into The Mind Of Charlie Swan III." In an interview with GQ, however, Coppola provided a little update on the pic regarding music, noting that he "used exclusively the music of Liam Hayes" having been "absorbed" by his tunes.

Roman Coppola and Wes Anderson are developing into quite the team. Coppola first served as a second unit director on Anderson’s 2004 film, “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.” In Anderson’s next film, “The Darjeeling Limited,” Coppola produced, co-wrote and returned to second unit duties. Along the way, Anderson discussed the idea of a film about a boy on an island who gets in a canoe and runs away. That seedling began to take shape after 'Darjeeling,'starting off from a series of conversations between Coppola and Anderson.

It’s hard to believe it’s been more than a decade since Roman Coppola continued the family legacy with his positively received directorial debut, “CQ.” In the years since, Coppola has focused on producing efforts such as sister Sophia’s “Somewhere” and Wes Anderson’s “Darjeeling Limited,” the latter of which Coppola also co-wrote. Most recently, Coppola co-wrote Anderson’s latest, “Moonrise Kingdom.” The release comes on the heels of the news that Coppola has finally returned to the directors chair for “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III,” which features a stellar ensemble cast including Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Patricia Arquette and, the most intriguing choice of all, Charlie Sheen, in the title, and lead, role.

It's been a decade since his directorial debut "CQ" but Roman Coppola will definitely make headlines later this year with his new film, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" -- if anything for his choice of male lead in Charlie Sheen. The middle child of Francis Ford Coppola, Roman has been immersed in the film industry since childhood (he featured as one of Tom Hagen's kids in "The Godfather") and, over the years, has often found time to collaborate with his father, sister and Wes Anderson. It's curious that Coppola hasn't been behind the camera more often, but the filmmaker has revealed that he has a few projects in mind he hopes to tackle after this sophomore effort.

While the decade-long drought between feature films will soon end as Roman Coppola continues his work in post on "A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charlie Swan III" -- his sophomore effort following 2001's "CQ" -- he certainly hasn't been lacking in things to do. He's been writing, producing and helming second unit on films for Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola and Francis Ford Coppola, and as part of The Directors Bureau has been making music videos and commercials. But this is easily the oddest entry of the bunch.
