It's been a decade since his directorial debut "CQ" but Roman Coppola will definitely make headlines later this year with his new film, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" -- if anything for his choice of male lead in Charlie Sheen. The middle child of Francis Ford Coppola, Roman has been immersed in the film industry since childhood (he featured as one of Tom Hagen's kids in "The Godfather") and, over the years, has often found time to collaborate with his father, sister and Wes Anderson. It's curious that Coppola hasn't been behind the camera more often, but the filmmaker has revealed that he has a few projects in mind he hopes to tackle after this sophomore effort.

While the decade-long drought between feature films will soon end as Roman Coppola continues his work in post on "A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charlie Swan III" -- his sophomore effort following 2001's "CQ" -- he certainly hasn't been lacking in things to do. He's been writing, producing and helming second unit on films for Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola and Francis Ford Coppola, and as part of The Directors Bureau has been making music videos and commercials. But this is easily the oddest entry of the bunch.

Late last night, the trailer for Whit Stillman's "Damsels In Distress" debuted, and for those who didn't catch it on the festival circuit last year, it was the first time they'd seen any new footage from the "Metropolitan" and "Barcelona" helmer in over a decade. By the time that 'Damsels' is released, nearly fourteen years will have passed since the release of Stillman's third film, "The Last Days Of Disco," a near-Malickian absence. While he's been absent for longer than most, he's far from alone. As we've discussed both last year, and last week, there's plenty of other filmmakers who have been missing in action for some time.

Filmmaker Roman Coppola is no stranger to chronicling strange corners of some seminal cultural decades. While he's spent the last decade assisting friends and family like Sofia, Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson (he co-wrote the upcoming "Moonrise Kingdom") his vastly underrated directorial debut, "CQ," is a hilarious and wonderfully weird look at the '60s, filtered through the black and white solipsism of the French New Wave and the wacky, outre aesthetic of spy films like "Danger Diabolik" and cornball sci-fi like "Barbarella."

Every year, Sundance provides a massive career boost to a handful of people. Sometimes it's a total newcomer -- think of Carey Mulligan, or Elizabeth Olsen in recent years -- who suddenly find themselves on every casting wishlist around.

While he's been busy producing for family (Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere"), co-writing with friends (Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom") and shooting second unit for both (Francis Ford Coppola's "Tetro" and Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited"), it's high time Roman Coppola made a new film. His last effort, the deeply underrated "CQ" was ten years ago and so we're very glad he's casting up his latest effort, the indie pic, "Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan" (apparently no longer titled "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III," unless Variety's being super terse).

The dry, sharp comedy stylings of rising star Aubrey Plaza ("Parks and Recreation," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) next to the train wreck that was (possibly still is) Charlie Sheen certainly sounds like an odd combination on paper. But on closer inspection, maybe it's really an inspired idea, especially given it's coming with the long-awaited return of one of our favorite underrated filmmakers.

Jason Schwartzman To Co-StarIn the midst of Charlie Sheen's public meltdown earlier this year, the actor made an appearance on the Today Show where he claimed that, despite everything that had happened, he still had film projects at his disposal. The list included a new sequel to "Major League," a project with Nick Cassavetes and another from director Roman Coppola. Considering the fact that three days prior to that appearance, Morgan Creek CEO James Robinson had come out and denied any claim of a "Major League" sequel, we (and presumably everybody else) assumed Sheen's claims were nothing more than a side effect of whatever he might have been on that day -- even though the filmmaker's sister Sofia Coppola did reveal that her brother had something in the works.

'Beginners' & 'Tanner Hall' Composer Roger Neil Writing ScoreLate last year, during the press rounds for "Somewhere," we spoke to Sofia Coppola, who was tight-lipped, but gave us a little teaser bit of info and a bit of hope: her brother Roman Coppola was finally working on a new film. “He’s working on something new,” she told us coyly. Something he would writing and directing again we asked? “Yeah, he’s working on a script that he put together.”

So the Oscars are over and while pundits debate how entertaining (or not) the broadcast was, for this writer, the biggest thrill of the night came from a preview for Charlie Sheen's upcoming "20/20" interview which featured the sure-to-be meme-spawning quote: "I'm on a drug, it's called Charlie Sheen." Pure gold. But as usual, that's just the tip of the iceberg from the Sheen Quote Machine and in an interview that ran this morning on the "Today" show, the actor revealed a pretty random future movie project he says has crossed his desk. We'll let the full quote speak for itself:
