The Great Gatsby
This weekend, “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann’s overstuffed piñata of a literary adaptation, opens everywhere (read our review). Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the mysterious mogul Jay Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, the object of his very intense desire. Anyone who has taken a freshman literature course (um, spoiler alert?) knows that the central love story of “The Great Gatsby” doesn’t exactly end well, but even more alarming is the fact that within the career of Mr DiCaprio this seems to be what a therapist would describe as “a definite pattern.” Over the years leo has been embroiled in a quite shocking array of cinematic trysts that ended in absolute catastrophe.

The story of "Romeo & Juliet" has been told, approximately, eleventy billion times. And we're not just talking the countless film versions. From the stage to television to that English class you slept through, Shakespeare's play about doomed lovers has been rich fodder for creative types, the shining example of romance fated to end in tragedy. You would think that a new movie version might try and twist things up a bit, or bring a new flavor to the proceedings. You would be wrong.

It’s been two years since Hailee Steinfeld impressed audiences as Mattie Ross in the Coen Brothers’ adaptation of Charles Portis' novel, “True Grit.” Her breakout turn earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a flurry of offers, including a role in next year’s blockbuster-to-be “Ender’s Game,” but her next big-screen appearance will be as Juliet in the newest, millennial-targeted, adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play, “Romeo & Juliet.”

Paul Giamatti has pretty much done it all. Drama, comedy, horror, satire, action and hell, even musicals (if you don't remember "Duets" he's also in the forthcoming "Rock Of Ages"). But Shakespeare? Looks like he's gonna cross that one off his list too.

Already at a young age, Kodi Smit-McPhee has an eye for interesting, complex material. The actor first broke out starring alongside Viggo Mortensen in John Hillcoat's grim "The Road," and last year he shone in Matt Reeves' "Let Me In" as vulnerable Owen who discovers his beautiful neighbour played by Chloe Moretz, is also a vampire. Not to mention, he's also got a part in Ari Folman's upcoming sci-fi/animation hybrid "The Congress." Well the young thesp is set to stand opposite another up-and-coming actress in his next film.

Say what you will about "Gossip Girl" (okay, it's terrible) but the show has served as a career launching pad of sorts. Blake Lively is currently making most of her exposure on the show landing some decent movie gigs ("The Town," Oliver Stone's "Savages"); Taylor Momsen has fashioned some sort of music career no one would otherwise care about, while it's only a matter of time before Leighton Meester finds her groove into the big time and is on her way after scoring a hit earlier this year with "The Roommate." Which brings us pretty boy and master of Brown Steel (see above) Ed Westwick. He seems to be moving his way up in the world, nabbing a small part in Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" and is now getting ready bust his iambic pentameter on our faces (that sounds gross) in a Shakespeare film.
