Is "The Shining" just a horror movie about a guy who goes berserk in a hotel, or is it subversively about the history of American genocide? Why did Stanley Kubrick use cans of Calumet and Tang in the hotel's storeroom? Were these just random products, or were they each chosen and framed in the camera with a specific intent? And what's the deal with the Bill Watson? If you think you know "The Shining," guess again, as Rodney Ascher's outstanding "Room 237" goes down the rabbit hole of the meanings and interpretations of the horror classic, from the plausible to the outlandish.

Some details from within a film production serve to heighten the project's legend overall: the genius of “Jaws” only increased when the film's original gameplan -- a fully functional shark -- failed to manifest itself for Steven Spielberg and co. But the opposite has been true with Stanley Kubrick's “The Shining,” as now another crewmember has come to debunk the myriad theories and meanings behind the director's film -- starting with those featured in Rodney Ascher's upcoming documentary “Room 237.”

You know that a film is a lasting classic when it can sustain another entire film being made about it. Be it "Citizen Kane," "Psycho" or "Apocalypse Now," many of the great movies have themselves been the subject of films (sometimes successfully, sometimes less so), and the latest to get the treatment is Stanley Kubrick's classic horror "The Shining," with the release this Friday of documentary "Room 237."

The Timberline Lodge, Oregon, does not have a Room 237. In Stephen King's book, the room of mystery is actually Room 217, but its proprietors felt that as the real-life double of Stanley Kubrick’s diabolical Overlook Hotel, the room’s axe-wielding associations mightn’t be the strongest draw for the vacationing family. Such is the pervasiveness of “The Shining,” and indeed 33 years after its release, horror anoraks and Kubrick devotees alike are still tugging away at its thematic carcass. With commentators batting for such subtextual teams as “Native American Oppression”, “Nazism in 1942”, or the wackier “Moon Landing Denial”, the conversation has run and run.

While Rodney Ascher's documentary "Room 237" quite vocally does not have the endorsement of the Stanley Kubrick estate, that hasn't stopped the marketing from paying homage to "The Shining." It was just about a month ago, the a clever trailed riffed on the original teaser and now that playfulness has extended to a new poster.

It's been a long, dark couple of months at the start of 2013, with not all that much that's been worth seeing, bar a few bright spots like "Side Effects" and "No." But as the days start to get sunnier and warmer (we hope so, at least, or we're going to jump off something tall fairly soon), the prospects at movie theaters are improving a bit too.

There are few films in the horror genre -- or even the general history of cinema -- that have continued to spur the kind of obsession, fascination and discussion decades after its release that Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" has. Indeed, the last few weeks have seen the script pages for the deleted original ending to the movie come to light, while a camera operator went on record about the helicopter shadows in the now classic opening to the movie. But there's oh so much more revealed in the excellent documentary "Room 237," a fascinating look at "The Shining." A new trailer has dropped, and should drum up more excitement for this one.

2012 was all about escape. Not only in terms of the big-budget movies that offered us escape from the increasingly ugly real world (how many superheroes or swoony vampires can we stomach?), but by the content of the more adult movies. Characters wanted an escape – from slavery, from a futuristic Korea, from time-travel gangsters, from a burdensome lover – and in these stories we were afforded tremendous freedom. They transported us, for sure, while reminding us of the very real hardships 2012 afforded us all. Below are my very favorite movies of the year, all of which I will be escaping to, again and again, for years to come.
