David Fincher Views The Series As A "Pervy Franchise"While Rooney Mara eventually won the coveted lead role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," it was an arduous wait and the list of the contenders was fierce. Sarah Snook, Sophie Lowe and Léa Seydoux were said to be the final candidates, and a mix of established and lesser known names like Ellen Page, Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, Emma Watson, Mia Wasikowska, Emily Browning and Katie Jarvis were all in the running at various points. However, people might remember that just before Mara snagged the part, Scarlett Johansson was surprisingly being tipped as a "shoo-in." At the time it seemed somewhat unlikely, but talking to Vogue magazine as part of a profile on Rooney Mara, Fincher confirms that Johansson did indeed deliver strongly at the audition but that she was ultimately just too darned attractive to play the squirrely, oddball and rebellious Lisbeth Salander.

If the Best Actor category, which we examined last week, is competitive, Best Actress is even more so -- as has been the case in the last few years, in fact. While there are plenty of thankless girlfriend and love interest roles most of the year, people are writing good roles for women, thank god, and there's a plethora of great actors, both veterans and newcomers, capable of taking the role and knocking them out of the park.

Is it just us, or are trailers getting shorter? Obviously, there have always been brief teasers around, but even the final clips rarely seem to top out over two minutes these days, happy to tantalize audiences with money shots and the "Inception" fart-trombone noise -- the days of old, with four-five minute trailers, sometimes even introduced by the cast or director themselves (like this all-time favourite of ours) seemingly long gone. Of course, you can rely on David Fincher to buck that trend.

Last night, advance screenings of Screen Gems' "Straw Dogs" around the country were preceded by a pleasant/nasty surprise from parent company Sony, in the form of an eight-minute preview of David Fincher's Feel-Bad Movie Of Christmas, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." While it was cut together like a trailer, and it may surface online, it was strictly for the hardcore fans, and, while un-spoilery, did indeed lean towards the R-rated end of the spectrum.

But Andrew Garfield Apparently Won't Be Doing ItAfter the publication last year of Peter Biskind's biography "Star," his victory in a "Dick Tracy" lawsuit, and his wife Annette Bening's Oscar-nomination this year, Warren Beatty has been more visible of late than he has been in a decade; the actor hasn't directed a film since 1998's "Bulworth," and hasn't been on screen since the 2001 train wreck "Town & Country." With all this attention, the 74-year-old star has done something productive with it; namely, started moving towards a new film: a comedy that seems to be the Howard Hughes project that Beatty's been working on for decades.
