Review: Danny Boyle's 'Trance' Is A Trippy, Twisty, Terrific Thriller

Trance, Rosario Dawson
He might have had a rockier patch in the mid-'00s -- no one saw his delightful fable "Millions," and sci-fi "Sunshine" was both a commercial disappointment and the most difficult shoot of his career -- but things couldn't have gone much better for Danny Boyle in the last few years. "Slumdog Millionaire" was a global hit and an Oscar sensation, winning a golden statue for Boyle himself, while follow-up "127 Hours" was equally well-received, and picked up another Best Picture nod. Furthermore, he oversaw the triumphant opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, a glorious, inventive and moving pageant that cemented his status as a beloved national hero. So where could he possibly go from there?

TIFF '11 Review: 'Ten Year' Brings Together A Strong Cast For A Mixed Bag Of Comedy & Drama

Births, funerals, marriage, anniversaries and even annual vacations have all served as plot devices in the reunion film, a genre that usually finds middle-aged or older characters dealing with a crisis that is exacerbated by seeing old family and friends. And while "Ten Year" certainly isn't breaking new territory, producer and star Channing Tatum, along with writer/director Jamie Linden ("Dear John"), do take an interesting approach. Wisely not going far beyond their own age bracket, this film brings together a pretty solid ensemble cast of some of the best up-and-coming actors working right now for a tale that catches up with a gaggle of friends for a reunion -- you guessed it -- ten years after their graduation from high school. Taking on a bunch of characters as they leave their twenties is definitely a smart concept but instead of offering what could have been an honest look at contemporary soon-to-be thirtysomethings and the challenges, fears and triumphs they have endured, "Ten Year" delivers a mixed bag of CW plots that at worst are cliché and predictable, with a very few that do stand out.

Two first looks at what are upcoming B-movies? Hard to say, you be the judge. The first is the action thriller "The Expatriate" starring Aaron Eckhart. It's a picture without many stars outside of Olga Kurylenko, and while she's certainly attractive, she's hardly a big star. The film is directed by Philipp Stölzl, a German director known for "North Face," "Young Goethe in Love" and music videos by Garbage, Evanescence and Rammstein.

With James McAvoy already on board Danny Boyle's next film, the thriller "Trance," the two names alone would basically attract any willing and able actor in Hollywood for a part. Indeed, Michael Fassbender was initially attached before dropping out due to scheduling issues, and Colin Firth's name was wishlisted for the co-starring role. And just a couple of weeks ago, it was revealed that Vincent Cassel was in the running for the juicy role. Well, he's nabbed it and one more actress in coming along as well.

Review: A Fat Man, Animals That Sound Like Sitcom Characters & The Terrible 'Zookeeper'

Early on in “Zookeeper,” Sony’s latest commercially craven piece of garbage from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company, an animal sees two bears fighting. Her response is, “They look like two bean bag chairs!” Ignoring the idea that this character, a giraffe, has probably never even seen a bean bag chair, this is a brilliant line -- mostly because it reveals the true instincts of the six (six!) writers tasked with bringing this story-less hook to the screen.

You gotta hand it to director Sebastian Gutierrez ("Women In Trouble," "Elektra Luxx"). He knows that his cinematic oeuvre lies in shooting as many beautiful women in as many skimpy outfits as possible (particularly his longtime ladyfriend Carla Gugino) and he certainly knows how to work a Rolodex, enlisting a bevy stars to feature in his low-budget features that nobody watches. It seems he cranks one of these out every six months, and so, here we go with "Girl Walks Into A Bar."

The Berlin Film Festival always brings a ton of news as independent producers shop around for pre-sales, and the latest project to be revealed is an intriguing, if odd-sounding drama, with an eclectic cast. Screen Daily reports that Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Lenny Kravitz are all attached to star in "The Blind Bastard Club," which will begin filming in April.

You gotta hand it to Channing Tatum. For a pet project, he really knows how to work his rolodex and call in some favors.
