Rosewater
In 16 years of hosting “The Daily Show,”Jon Stewart has transformed into a major cultural figure. He now has the ability to alter the political media landscape in ways he likely never imagined. That makes his decision to return to the world of movies surprising. Then again, “Rosewater,” which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival (read our review here) and is currently playing the Toronto International Film Festival, is a bit of a passion project for the first-time director.

Rosewater
The category of Iranian prison movies with feel-good endings is a small subgenre, and one that "Rosewater" is likely to have all to itself for the near future. With his feature film writing and directing debut, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart clearly wanted to make a people-have-the-power message picture that would resonate at least as much with American youths as longtime students of political repression in the Middle East. That transparent desire to make the material as accessible as possible to U.S. moviegoers —starting with the old-fashioned notion of having all the Iranians speaking to each other exclusively in English—results in a sometimes overly slick take on potentially tough subject matter. For better or worse, torture-themed films don’t get too much easier to take than this one.

Imitation Game
We're well underway on festival season: the Venice Film Festival is going into its second day, and as we speak, our intrepid correspondent is mid-air on the way to the Telluride International Film Festival, which kicks off tomorrow. An increasingly crucial Oscar launch pad as well as a nicely curated festival, Telluride also differs from other festivals in that it only announces its lineup at the last minute. And by the last minute, we mean just now.

"Did you ever work at a restaurant? Remember your first or second day, how simple shit like 'Where is the ketchup?' takes you five minutes where it takes someone else 10 seconds? Especially early on, there were a lot of people who didn’t know where we kept the ketchup," Jon Stewart told EW about this experience directing his debut feature film. He admits he learned the gig on the fly, a far cry from his established routine on "The Daily Show."

You can have a great movie, but if you don't position it properly, it won't find the audience it deserves, nor maximize the profitability you were hoping for. That's a longwinded way of saying some movies have announced some new release dates, so let's dive right in.

As the red carpets are rolled up and the screening rooms shut for another year, a final few nuggets of casting news reach us from Cannes. First, via The Wrap, is some news on “Rosewater,” the film Jon Stewart is taking 12 weeks off "The Daily Show" this summer to shoot (don’t panic, John Oliver will be hosting in his absence). Despite Stewart’s comedic day job, "Rosewater" is a drama, based on a true story about Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained in Iran while covering the 2009 elections there.

Quick! Who remembers that in 2010 "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart optioned the life rights of Iranian/Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari for a feature film? Well he did, and now it looks like he's exercising those rights, by leaping into his directorial debut in a pretty surprising and exciting bit of news.
