Is there a curse of sci-fi movies set on Mars? We don't believe that, but there's plenty of evidence to support that theory, with virtually every film set on our nearest planetary neighbor -- from "Mission To Mars" to "Red Planet" from "Ghosts Of Mars" and "Mars Needs Moms" to "John Carter" -- all disappointing critically, commercially or both. But director Ruairi Robinson ain't afraid of no curse.

It seems that these days, you don't even need a feature-length film under your belt to be handed the keys to a big, expensive sci-fi flick: a number of directors have leaped straight into tentpole territory with a CGI-heavy short film. The likes of Neill Blomkamp and Carl Erik Rinsch have landed their feature debuts through FX-led short films, and now another director looks set to join them.
