Ghost In The Shell Rupert Sanders
In 2009 “Shutter Island” screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis was tapped to adapt the Japanese manga “Ghost In The Shell” for the American big-screen and here we are five years later, per Deadline, and DreamWorks has finally locked down their director by signing up “Snow White and the Huntsman” helmer Rupert Sanders.

Ever since the mini-scandal broke about his fling with Kristen Stewart, director Rupert Sanders has been busy getting lost in his work. He's lined up all manner of projects over the past year or so including "Van Helsing," the Frederick Forsyth adaptation "The Kill List," the space-set "The Juliet," a project described as a "sci-fi 'Battle of Algiers'" and the crime drama "90 Church." And while none have started rolling, Sanders name back in the media as his ex-wife Liberty Ross has re-opened the events of last year, telling her side of the story to Vanity Fair. And as always, Sanders is plowing ahead with another gig.

Since his debut "Snow White & The Huntsman" was released last year (followed soon after by a certain controversy involving the filmmaker and his lead actress), director Rupert Sanders has flirted with a whole bunch of projects without necessarily committing to one. Tom Cruise vehicle 'Van Helsing," "Pirates of the Caribbean 5," Frederick Forsyth adaptation "The Kill List," the space-set "The Juliet," a project described as a "sci-fi 'Battle of Algiers,'—all have appeared on the trades, none have turned into anything concrete as yet.

We reported way back in October that various people were trying to get different projects based on the life of escapologist Harry Houdini off the ground, but doing so is proving harder than getting out of a tank of water while shackled (you know, for someone who isn't Houdini). Disappointingly, Joe Wright is no longer being linked to Summit Entertainment's project, which features a script based on the book “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero." Word now is focusing on Dean Parisot, chiefly a comedy and TV director but also maker of the upcoming “Red 2”, the kind of kinetic, lighthearted action that the Houdini flick is likely to aim for (taking its cure from the huge success of Guy Ritchie's “Sherlock Holmes”). Could be interesting?

With "Pirates Of The Caribbean 5" simply an inevitability at this point -- it's already slated for a 2015 release, joining Disney's insane line-up that year -- it looks like the studio wants to keep costs down. Surely, Johnny Depp will be negotiating a Robert-Downey-Jr-making-$50-million-for-The-Avengers sized deal and taking a cut of the back end, which means that in the director's chair, a newer, cheaper face will be given a shot. So that means no Rob Marshall or Gore Verbinski, but perhaps one of these guys.

While Kristen Stewart remains off the radar as the media contemplates her next move, the other man Rupert Sanders continues to rebound. Just last week he was linked as a possible helmer for the Tom Cruise starring "Van Helsing," and now a sci-fi flick has crossed his desk.

It takes two to tango, and while Kristen Stewart was kind of put over the coals for her dalliance with "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders, his narrative became that of a man trying to save his marriage. And while we let the tabloids keep tabs on that latest in the affair fallout, everyone else and Sanders too it seems is getting on with their lives. Universal is pushing ahead with a sequel to the fairy tale movie with Stewart, but the question remains as to whether or not Sanders will return. And if he doesn't, it seems there may be another franchise for him to put his hands on.

Following the oscillation of hesitant studio opinion around “Snow White and the Huntsman,” it's nice to see everything settle down and reflect the film as the flavorless, modest earner that is its destiny. No person could be happier for this news though than director Rupert Sanders, who, with this weekend's $55 million box office take, finds himself in the enviable position of assessing future projects, two of which he's recently teased to the public.

Today marks the release of “Snow White and The Huntsman,” and for those on the Universal lot, the occasion is one filled with quiet anticipation as the audience numbers come trickling back. Only two weeks after “Battleship” fell alongside that cinematic punching bag “John Carter” as one of this year's box office failures, the studio is now looking at its Kristen Stewart vehicle in a new light, basically pulling an about-face after so confidently exploring a vast future for it in the past few weeks.

You've gotta assume this means Universal is predicting a fairytale ending. While the studio's upcoming summer tentpole, "Snow White and the Huntsman," didn't ever appear like it would lend itself to a sequel initially -- it is, afterall, somewhat of a self-contained Snow White story -- we heard a few weeks ago via Universal that chief Ron Meyer believes that the series could have a shelf-life past the first film if it were to center itself around the character of the Huntsman as played by Chris Hemsworth.
