But Of Course: 'Snow White And The Huntsman' Is The First Of A Planned Trilogy

There are many arguments to be made that "Star Wars" ruined the movies, but one of the more persuasive is the way that it popularized the idea of the trilogy. George Lucas didn't invent the concept (that would have been the Ancient Greeks, thank you), but by making both the original films and the prequels, he popularized the concept, ensuring that almost any hit film would be intended as only the first part of three films, each one bigger than the last. And to a degree, it makes sense: it mirrors the three act structure that virtually every screenplay uses as a template, enabling a complete story with ups and downs to be told over a longer running time.

Judd Apatow's 'Knocked Up' Spin-Off Now Set For December 21st, 2012 Every so often, Hollywood studios find themselves in a game of $300 million chicken, when two films with strikingly similar premises are green-lit simultaneously. And almost invariably, the first film out of the blocks ends up as the more successful: "Capote" landed a full year before the identically-plotted "Infamous," and despite a less starry cast walked away with more awards and a bigger haul, while "Dante's Peak" outgrossed the similarly lava-themed "Volcano" by over $50 million.

We Hear He Used A Felt-Tip Pen Sign His Contract Update: "Thor" has grossed a whopping $283 million worldwide. Chris Hemsworth was smart enough to wait and see if the picture was a hit before he signed on for "Snow White and the Huntsman" because he had already been in talks before the movie opened. Now, as you suspected, he's got the gig.

We're kind of loving Viggo Mortensen at the moment. Despite coming to career ascension with "The Lord Of The Rings" films, the 52-year-old actor always seemed uncomfortable in tentpoles and super-budgeted films, instead choosing to use his post-'LOTR' fame to carefully attach himself to more interesting and thoughtful work like his trio of David Croneberg films ("A History of Violence," "Eastern Promises" and the upcoming "A Dangerous Method"), John Hillcoat's "The Road" and forthcoming Walter Salles adaptation of "On The Road."

You gotta love who how careful everybody around "Snow White And The Huntsman" are being about Kristen Stewart taking on the titular role. Last week actress "loomed large as a potential lead" and now it seems things have taken one tiny step closer to Stewart locking the lead role.

Newcomers Bella Heathcote and Alicia Vikander Also Linked To Role It's been a few months since there was any news on the duelling 'Snow White' projects set up at Universal and Relativity -- the former has newcomer Rupert Sanders attached to direct, the latter visual stylist Tarsem, and while both have had names rumored to be involved, no solid word has come out for some time. But suddenly, the floodgates have opened, with news coming in last night that Relativity want Julia Roberts to play the evil queen in their project, "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White," while, as rumored, Charlize Theron is on the verge of signing on for the equivalent role in Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Michael Fassbender The Frontrunner To Play The Huntsman In Universal's Version Of ProjectHollywood loves its dueling projects racing to get to the screen first. They make for a good story, and generally who ever gets there second doesn't get there at all. See Baz Luhrmann's "Alexander The Great" project with Leonardo DiCaprio that was basically shuttered because Oliver Stone's "Alexander" arrived first, and Toby Jones' "Infamous" that limped unnoticed into theaters when "Capote" and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance stole all its heat.

Tom Hardy Will Be Too Busy Being Awesome In 'The Dark Knight Rises'It speaks to how far Tom Hardy has come that his name was in the early mix for the lead in Universal's "The Snow White And The Huntsman," but the timing always seemed a little too close for comfort. The actor will be shooting "This Means War" until December and then will begin work on Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" in the spring. Alas, we'll have to wait a while yet for Hardy to land his own franchise vehicle. However, undaunted, Universal has put an offer to the biggest A-list star there is.

Just a couple of days after we learned Tom Hardy was circling "Snow White And The Huntsman," a bit more potential casting news is trickling forth. While Angelina Jolie was also being courted to join the film, which looks to start shooting in early '11 under neophyte director Rupert Sanders, it seemed more like a longshot studio wish given that the actress is right in the midst of shooting her directorial debut and would most likely be in post-production at that time.
