With Venice and Telluride in the rear-view mirror, and TIFF starting to wind down (we've still coverage to come, but very few films remain that haven't been screened to press), it feels like the perfect time to kick off, for real, our annual awards coverage. There's a part of you that groans, and that's fair enough -- it does feel like only yesterday that we were talking "Argo" vs. "Life of Pi" and so on, but even with five months to go until the ceremony itself, over half of the film that'll be in play have been unveiled. And you can bet your bottom dollar that Oscar campaigns have been underway for weeks, if not months.

TIFF Review: ‘Rush’ Starring Chris Hemsworth & Daniel Brühl Finds Ron Howard In Top Gear

Rush, Chris Hemsworth
It's only "rebels, lunatics and dreamers" that decide to get behind the wheel and race for a living, so quips Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) in the early moments of Ron Howard's "Rush," and there's an undeniable logic to his observation. For who else would willingly strap themselves into a fiberglass frame, powered by a 500-horsepower engine to drive at unimaginable speeds around a racetrack, where even the faintest hint of a wrong move could end your life? And who else would embrace the odds where at the beginning of each race year, it's known that an average of two drivers will die out of a field of twenty-five? Well, Lauda is one of those people, as is Englishman James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), and together they made worldwide headlines for their intense rivalry and passion for the sport. Howard's film matches that fuel-injected devotion in a film that goes beyond mere sports biopic to tale of two men forged by gasoline, jumpsuits and ambition.

10 Films To See In September
We’ve entered September, the point where the films aren’t bombastic enough for summer (but not outright crap reserved for August), and don’t have the longevity or clout to be remembered come Oscar time. Ten movies made the cut, along with a swath of honorable mentions, so September might be a good time to take a break from school or work and go hit the multiplex!

12 Years A Slave
Yesterday, organizers of the Telluride Film Festival surprised folks by unveiling this year's slate, a full two days before things kick off in Colorado, an interesting move considering past years has seen the lineup kept under lock and key until the last possible moment. But as always, there are a few more tricks up the sleeve of the festival. The official press release noted: "Additional Sneak Previews may play outside the main program and will be announced on the Telluride Film Festival website over the course of the five-day weekend," with rumors suggested that there might be as many as three movies dropping by unannounced. So, what could they be?

Heading into a hairpin turn before its release next month, Ron Howard's "Rush" will first have to get around the curve at TIFF, where he hopes audiences will shift into first gear for his true story racing drama. And with the movie getting ready to cross the finish line, a few more previews for the movie have rushed online. (Sorry, we're feeling punny today.)

We really don't get racing at all. Watching a bunch of cars drive around a track for hours on end? Not really our bag, and Universal knows that if they want the '70s-set, racing drama "Rush" to reach an audience beyond Sunday afternoon couch potatoes, they're gonna have to sell this thing. So why not introduce Chris Hemworth's lead character James Hunt like smoldering, sexy, risk-taking hunk? And that's exactly what they do.

Ron Howard hasn't just been sitting around narrating the upcoming episodes of "Arrested Development." The director has putting the details on his next feature effort, the true story racing saga "Rush," and while a movie about gears and waving flags might seem like a drag on paper, he's chose a helluva tale to spin on the big screen. And a new trailer is here to give the dudes from "Fast & Furious" a serious run for their nitro.

Just a couple of days after the UK trailer came tearing around the track, we now get a U.S. spot for Ron Howard's racing drama "Rush" along with some new pics for the movie that's revving its engine pretty hard, pretty early. We're still months away from the film arriving, but perhaps Universal realizes that racing movies probably need a bit of a harder push than other genres. Good thing that so far, it looks pretty rock solid.

The racing genre as a whole doesn't offer a lot to choose from, particularly when it comes to dramas that just stick to the race track and don't burn your retinas like "Speed Racer" or jack up your experience with 'splosions like the "Fast & Furious" franchise. In fact, it's been a while since we've had a movie set strictly on the race track, but Ron Howard's "Rush" is not only getting behind that wheel, but also telling a great story.
