Every year, we wake up for the Academy Award nominations expecting a surprise, hoping the same ten or fifteen movies don't keep getting referenced, honored, what-have-you. Last year, the Academy did a decent job as the field of Best Picture candidates swelled to ten, allowing for more exposure for films from different categories. We're not going to go around endorsing "District 9" as one of that year's finer films, but we were happy it got to sit at the table.

Sure, the internet may be ablaze this afternoon with images of Spider-Man and Captain America, but you know what we're more excited about? This. The firmly excellent romantic drama "Blue Valentine," finally shorn of the albatross that was its NC-17 rating, has begun its limited rollout, and is going great guns, picking up a mean screen average and an impressive haul of over a million on only a few screens. a gratifying debut for a film that became something of a favorite of many Playlist team members over the course of 2010.

Now that the whole ratings brouhaha has been resolved and "Blue Valentine" has received the much more reasonable and fair R-rating instead of the reactionary original NC-17 tag, The Weinstein Company can focus on the task at hand: getting asses into seats for what they hope will be an Oscar contender come February.

We're bordering on giving Nicolas Winding Refn a *** job with all the myriad reports on his work, but what can we say, we admire the Danish filmmakers work ("Bronson," "The Pusher" trilogy, "Valhalla Rising") and his upcoming film "Drive" is very high up on our most anticipated 2011 list. So we'll keep it brief.

Gosling Not Averse To The Idea, Interested In The Challenge Of Becoming A Triple ThreatRyan Gosling and Derek Cianfrance's working relationship has already spawned the highly acclaimed romantic drama "Blue Valentine" with Michelle Williams and is set to continue with the newly-announced Jack London-inspired "The Place Beyond The Pines," which will center on "fathers and guns, and it has motorcycles and guns in it." But it looks like the duo are eyeing more potential projects to collaborate on.

Actor Says He'd Consider A Role Like 'The Flash' If The Danish Filmmaker Was Directing; Has Discussed 'Wonder Woman' With Him TooEXCLUSIVE: We recently sat down and talked with Ryan Gosling about Derek Cianfrance's very-excellent and now R-Rated relationship drama “Blue Valentine,” and yes, of course our conversation veered off into other topics chiefly Gosling's upcoming collaboration with Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn on the action drama, "Drive," co-starring Carey Mulligan. A big fan of the director's gnarly, twisted and previous works like the prison drama, "Bronson," or the near-psychedelic, meditative Viking actioner,"Valhalla Rising," Gosling told us himself that he had handpicked Refn to direct "Drive."

So much for all those conversations Playlist writer Drew Taylor just had with Derek Cianfrance, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams about the dreaded NC-17 rating their indie drama, "Blue Valentine," received earlier this year, which threatened to ruin the film's very viable Oscar chances and perhaps more importantly the opportunity to be seen by wider audiences under 17 (we hear teenagers like both Gosling and Williams, but hey, we could be wrong).
