In one of the bigger weeks of the awards season (bar Oscar nominations week itself), we've already seen the LA Film Critics Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards, among others, hand down their winners or nominees for the films and actors of the past twelve months. And this morning, the Academy's black sheep cousin (the one who turns up at family gatherings for the free booze, namedrops about the time he met Johnny Depp, then leaves), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have announced their nominees for their 70th Golden Globe Awards.

Picking on "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" makes us feel like a bit of a bully, as though we're mercilessly teasing that super nice but incredibly dumb girl in class. It's an affable, inoffensive British comedy that just wants you to like it so much that you can't help but snicker behind its back. Or are we the only ones who are that cruel?

It's possible you may have not noticed it, but three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom has become an immensely prolific director. Though he was Miramax's go-to guy in the late nineties and early aughts, that company's significantly lower profile led to him moving in another direction. But he rebounded with a flourish, scoring his second biggest hit with the Nicolas Sparks' adaptation "Dear John", and now he's back with the romantic comedy "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen".

While Lasse Halstrom will always have "My Life As A Dog," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "The Cider House Rules" to his resume, in recent years, his string of increasingly mediocre-to-terrible films have nearly erased any pleasant memories we might have had. So when his latest effort "Salmon Fishing In Yemen" popped up at TIFF, we didn't exactly go out of our way to see it. But a curious thing happened, as amongst the chatter throughout the fest, we began to hear some good word about the film. Well, it's now on its way to theaters and we can see why it came out of TIFF with a bit of shine.

'Salmon Fishing In Yemen' Baits Spring Release DateWerner Herzog is having one helluva 2011. His 3D documentary "Cave Of Forgotten Dreams" has been an arthouse smash hit, still playing theaters (in Montreal where this writer is from, it was brought back for as second run due to popular demand -- that pretty much never happens) and in the best casting news of the year, Herzog landed the villain role opposite Tom Cruise in the thriller "One Shot." Just typing that out still makes our mind reel. He hit TIFF last month with his new documentary "Into The Abyss," and while Sundance Selects were going to wait until 2012 to release it, Herzog has twisted their arm to get into the theaters a little bit sooner. When we saw that "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen," the latest from director Lasse Hallstrom had been added to the TIFF slate, we didn't go out of our way to find time to see it. The director, who impressed with "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "The Cider House Rules" has long settled into helming a string of increasingly mediocre films like "An Unfinished Life," "The Hoax," "Hachi: A Dog's Tale" and last year's intolerable "Dear John." So can you blame us if we didn't carve out time to see it in Toronto? Turns out the joke was on us, as according to most people we heard from, "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" was a pleasant surprise. Nothing earth-shattering, but a worthwhile, entertaining little nugget that was certainly a step up from the director's other recent work. Well, CBS Films didn't waste any time in acquiring the rights and though we didn't get a chance to see it, our pals over at C7nema have pointed us in the direction of a couple of clips from the film.

It's been a fairly quiet market for big film deals at Toronto so far, with the sole major sale -- that of "Shame" to Fox Searchlight -- having been in the works since Venice, and even then, the film reportedly only sold for a six-figure sum, the film's backers placing great importance on being able to release the film before the end of the year, uncut, with an awards push for star Michael Fassbender. But the slow start looks to be coming to an end, with plenty of films courting distributors, and the first of them looks to have found a suitor.

Last time we talked about the awards race, we were halfway through the year, and it was anyone's game, with only a handful of even vaguely serious contenders emerging both from wide releases, and from the festivals up to Cannes. Our conclusion was that only "Midnight in Paris," "The Artist" and "The Tree of Life" were real contenders, with a handful of other films looking like they might pick up nominations here and there, but unlikely to be in the final ten.
