This fact gets trotted out every year, and it continues to baffle, but here it is: the biggest opening weekend for a baseball-themed movie is “The Benchwarmers” with $19.7 million. Despite the fact that no single human being has ever willingly watched that film beyond that first weekend, it’s managed to sustain that record despite a number of contemporary mainstream baseball releases. But this weekend, somehow, the adventures of Spade, Schneider and Heder have been surpassed by “42,” the Jackie Robinson biopic.

It seems we have a weekend of disaster on our hands. Besides the apocalypse - set during a couples' brunch, of all places - this batch of films details the dystopic effects of modern technology, a futuristic world where diseases are commodified, a battle for survival at the ends of the earth (aka, the Norwegian tundra), and a study of man's inability to relate. And, of course, the cataclysmic "Scary Movie" franchise makes its reappearance. The lone light at the end of the tunnel is a heartwarming come-together-sports movie, a good pick-me-up and strong antidote to the hopelessness of life everywhere else. We're pretty pumped. And you, faithful cinephiles: which Armageddon flick gets your blood pumping?

It has not been a great year for comedy thus. We won't even get into "A Haunted House" or "Movie 43," and while "Identity Thief" is a massive box office smash, it's also unbearably awful. As for this weekend's "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone"? It has flashes of humor but it's a missed opportunity over all, although we will say that Jay Mohr is surprisingly hilarious in it. All of which brings us to "Scary Movie 5," which continues the unfunny train of 2013.

This is what a tax write-off looks like folks. While the "Scary Movie" franchise to date has been mind-bogglingly successful, with the last entry earning $90 million at the box office, for this latest installment (without series lead Anna Faris) it seems the Weinsteins have lost all interest is producing another hit, and mostly just want to keep the brand going. Cheap, featuring a bunch of no names along with cameos from the likes of Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and Katt Williams who will be using the paycheques to pay any past or future lawyers fees, the new trailer for "Scary Movie 5" shows how low the bar the go.

Oh hey, check it out, a first look at the early contender for worst film of 2013. Part of the formula for the “Scary Movie” franchise -- surely the franchise of our time -- includes cameos by celebrities who are usually the first kill of the movie. But the producers of the upcoming "Scary Movie 5" might have bit off more than they can chew when they hired Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan to bring their brand of famousness to the latest chapter in the horror comedy saga.

Quick, can you name the people killed off in the opening of the four "Scary Movie" films to date? If you answered Carmen Electra, Natasha Lyonne, Jenny McCarthy, Pamela Anderson, Shaquille O'Neal and Dr. Phil, then this bit of news might be of importance to you. It will also be a spoiler as well.

The rehabilitation/comeback of Lindsay Lohan has been... unpredictable, at best. But Lord knows she's trying. This spring she hit "Saturday Night Live" for an uneven hosting gig, and earlier this summer she wrapped the contentious shoot of the Lifetime celeb-ploitation flick "Liz & Dick," which had its own share of production isses. Currently, she's in pre-production on Paul Schrader's micro-indie erotic thriller "The Canyons." Her next move? No, it's not another one of her bi-weekly photo sessions with Terry Richardson. It's potentially a role in a wheezing comedy franchise. Guess you can't argue that she's selective...

Well that clearly didn't take very long. While Marvel's "The Avengers," has eclipsed "The Hunger Games" as the year's highest grossing film worldwide, the teen-friendly dystopian sensation (which is still the highest domestic grosser of the year so far) still has massive appeal and two more sequels to boot. And so Hollywood bottom feeders Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have announced that they've pulled out their crayons, kindergarten-safe scissors and scratch and sniff stickers, and will be assembling a spoof of the Lionsgate franchise. Naturally...
